Senior Data Scientist, Contract, Sydney (2 positions)
About the opportunity

A NSW Government agency is expanding its Chief Data Office, adding two Senior Data Scientist contractors to a program of advanced analytics and modern AI work supporting nationally significant public safety initiatives. This is a rare government brief that genuinely wants both classical statistical rigour and hands-on modern AI capability, not a platform-engineering role dressed up as data science.

The role

• Lead the design and delivery of advanced statistics and machine learning solutions, including regression, classification, time series analysis, Bayesian methods and causal inference
• Design and deliver scientifically defensible AI and modern deep learning solutions, with humans in the loop and strict governance requirements
• Own the full lifecycle of data science problems, from problem definition through to model development, validation, deployment and monitoring
• Work hands-on with large, complex and sensitive government datasets
• Act as a mentor and trusted advisor, translating complex analytical work into plain language for non-technical stakeholders

What you'll bring

• 8 to 10 years' industry experience delivering advanced statistics, data science and applied research in complex environments
• Tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline (Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science or related)
• Expert-level Python (NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow) and very strong SQL
• Hands-on exposure to modern AI techniques, including deep learning (computer vision, NLP or transformer-based models)
• Ability to obtain a Baseline security clearance and eligibility to obtain Negative Vetting 1 (NV1), you do not need to already hold NV1
