Job Purpose

To install, commission, service, and repair cold rooms and refrigerated (reefer) containers to a standard that keeps our clients' cold chains running without interruption. The Technician is the face of ITC on site: technically competent, safety-conscious, and able to communicate clearly with clients before, during, and after every job.

Key Responsibilities

Cold Room Installation & Commissioning

• Install cold room insulated panels, doors, refrigeration equipment, piping, electrical wiring, and control systems in accordance with drawings, method statements, and project specifications.

• Install and set up compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, control valves, and associated components in specified locations.

• Carry out pressure testing, evacuation, refrigerant charging, and system start-up.

• Configure and program temperature controllers (e.g. Carel, Eliwell, Dixell) to design setpoints, and verify alarm and defrost functions.

• Support commissioning activities, including temperature pull-down verification and data logging for handover.

Servicing, Maintenance & Repair

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on cold rooms and refrigeration systems in line with maintenance checklists and contract requirements.

• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls faults; diagnose root causes and carry out rectification, not just symptomatic fixes.

• Detect and repair refrigerant leaks; top up refrigerant only after the leak has been identified and rectified.

• Dismantle malfunctioning systems and replace worn or defective components; perform mechanical overhauls including compressor changeouts.

• Carry out refrigerant recovery and reclamation using proper recovery equipment, in compliance with NEA requirements

Reefer Container Service & Repair

• Diagnose and rectify reefer container malfunctions, including controller alarms, sensor faults, refrigeration circuit issues, and electrical faults.

• Perform pre-trip inspections (PTI), repairs, and preventive maintenance on reefer units of major makes (e.g. Carrier, Thermo King, Daikin, Star Cool).

• Plug in, unplug, and monitor reefer containers at depots, ports, and client premises as scheduled.

• Respond to breakdown calls on live cargo with appropriate urgency, and escalate promptly when cargo temperature is at risk.

Reporting & Documentation

• Prepare accurate service reports after every job and obtain the customer's endorsement before leaving site.

• Prepare temperature logs, PTI records, and commissioning reports on completion of works, to the documentation standard required by the client (including GMP/pharmaceutical clients where applicable).

• Maintain records of repairs, refrigerant usage, and personal job schedules.

• Inform the supervisor of materials, spares, and consumables required to keep equipment and the service van properly stocked.

Safety & Compliance

• Comply with the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act, company safe work procedures, and site-specific rules at all times.

• Participate in toolbox meetings and risk assessments; use the correct PPE for the task, including for work in sub-zero cold rooms.

• Carry out hot work (brazing/welding) and work at height only when properly trained and authorised, with valid permits where required.

• Report unsafe conditions, near-misses, and incidents to the supervisor immediately.

General

• Communicate professionally with clients regarding equipment problems, work carried out, and follow-up recommendations.

• Collect, deliver, and install materials and supplies as required.

• Undertake other reasonable duties assigned by the supervisor or management, consistent with the scope of the role.

Job Requirements

Essential

• NITEC in Refrigeration Technology / Facility Technology (Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration) / Electrical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience in commercial refrigeration or reefer servicing.

• Sound knowledge of refrigeration cycles, electrical wiring, and mechanical works; able to read wiring diagrams and P&IDs.

• Able to communicate in English (spoken and written) sufficient for service reports and client interaction.

• Willing to perform rostered standby duty and respond to after-hours breakdown calls.

Good to have

• Experience with reefer containers, including PTI procedures and port/depot operations.

• Experience with CO₂ transcritical or other natural-refrigerant systems, glycol systems, or GMP/pharmaceutical cold rooms.

• Certification in refrigerant handling, work-at-height, boom/scissor lift, or forklift operation.

• Class 3 driving licence (able to drive the company service vehicle).

• Existing PSA port pass or prior experience working within port/terminal security requirements.
