About the role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Health Officer to join our dynamic Environmental Health team on a full-time. This role is vital in ensuring compliance with environmental health legislation and fostering a high quality of life for our community through safe environmental health practices.

We are also seeking to establish a talent pool of qualified, experienced, and suitable Environmental Health professionals to fill any vacant positions within the environmental health team over the next 12 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental health inspections of food businesses, public spaces, health premises, and community facilities to ensure compliance.
  • Assess complex statutory development applications related to environmental health standards and regulations.
  • Investigate public and environmental health complaints, coordinating responses and follow-up actions.
  • Provide expert advice on environmental health matters to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare reports, legal briefs, and maintain records in line with statutory requirements and City policies.

About the successful candidate

The successful candidate must hold a tertiary qualification in Environmental Health (or a related disciplined) approved by the Chief Health Officer, possess a strong knowledge of environmental health legislation, and have considerable experience in a similar role.

Applicants with Environmental Health qualifications from outside WA must have their qualifications reviewed and approved by Western Australian Environmental Health Professional Review Board, unless they are listed in the Government Gazette 7 October 2025 (#118).

Applicants should also possess:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in negotiation, conflict resolution, and communication.
  • Strong research, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective time management and organisational skills.
  • Eligible for appointment as an Authorised Person and Inspector for noise inspections and investigations under the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
  • A current ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence.
  • A current and valid National Police Certificate.

What we offer

This is a full-time, permanent position offering a salary range of $98,805 to $114,945 per annum, dependent on skills and experience, plus superannuation.

The City may consider part-time employment arrangements for the right candidate.

The City of Nedlands is situated just 7km from Perth and stretches from the banks of the beautiful Swan River to the edge of the Indian Ocean. On 1 July, 1959 the City of Nedlands was proclaimed at the command of Governor Sir Charles Gairdner, in the packed Dalkeith Civic Hall. Mr Allan Jenkins read out the proclamation and the Minister for Local Government, Mr Leslie Logan, M.L.C. conducted the official swearing in ceremony of the new Mayor, John Charles Smith, the twelve new Councillors and the auditors. He then appointed Mr Allan Jenkins as the City's first Town Clerk. Among those present was MLA for Nedlands, Deputy Premier Charles Court.

Significant events and dates that contributed to the development of the City of Nedlands:

1893: The first move to establish Local Government in our area with the creation of the Claremont Road Board on 31 March, 1893, governing a total area of ten square miles; forty years after the death of Adam Armstrong, Nedlands' first resident.

1898: Approximately two square miles excised to form the Municipality of Claremont.

1932: Name changed from Claremont Road Board to Nedlands Road Board.

1956: Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the Municipality of Nedlands.

1959: One hundred and thirty years after the first British settlement around the Swan River, Nedlands achieved City status. Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the City of Nedlands while under the guidance of Mayor John Charles Smith Esq., JP Mayor.
