McArthur is seeking an experienced Freedom of Information professional for an opportunity within a major Australian Government department in Canberra.

We have a strong preference for candidates who are current ongoing APS employees and are able to move via a Section 26 transfer.

This opportunity would suit an experienced APS6 or EL1 FOI practitioner with strong working knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act 1982, demonstrated experience managing complex FOI matters and the ability to provide high-quality technical advice to senior stakeholders and decision-makers.

Key responsibilities will include:

* Managing complex FOI matters from receipt through to finalisation, ensuring statutory timeframes are met.
* Triaging and prioritising FOI requests and identifying matters requiring escalation.
* Providing technical FOI advice to decision-makers and action officers, including advice relating to searches, exemptions, consultations and release decisions.
* Engaging directly with applicants to clarify requests, negotiate scope and manage extensions where required.
* Coordinating searches and consultations across internal business areas, other Commonwealth agencies and relevant third parties.
* Preparing high-quality correspondence, schedules, recommendations and decision material for delegated decision-makers.
* Liaising with external stakeholders and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner where required.
* Maintaining accurate FOI case records, reporting and disclosure requirements.
* Contributing to improvements in FOI processes, templates and guidance.

To be considered, you will need:

* Demonstrated experience applying the Freedom of Information Act 1982 within a Commonwealth Government environment.
* Strong experience managing FOI matters, preferably including complex or sensitive requests.
* The ability to interpret and apply FOI exemptions and prepare defensible written recommendations and decision material.
* Strong written communication, stakeholder engagement and case-management skills.
* Australian citizenship.
* A current Baseline security clearance or higher.

Section 26 Transfer

Current ongoing APS employees who are eligible and interested in moving under section 26 of the Public Service Act 1999 are strongly encouraged to apply. Please include your current substantive APS classification, agency and security clearance level with your application.

The role is Canberra-based and may be filled at the APS6 or EL1 level, depending on the successful candidate's experience and the agreed engagement arrangements.

To express your interest, please submit an up-to-date CV outlining your relevant Commonwealth FOI experience.
