Backend Engineer - AI Solutions

• Employment Type: Contract (1 year renewable with chances of conversion)

Job Overview
We are seeking a Backend Engineer to design, build, deploy, and operate secure backend services that power AI, machine learning, and generative AI solutions for government digital services. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI, working closely with product, policy, data, cybersecurity, DevOps, and platform teams to translate operational needs into reliable, production-ready systems. This is a great opportunity for a proactive and resourceful engineer with strong backend fundamentals to build AI-enabled capabilities within a public sector environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement backend services supporting machine learning, generative AI, and other intelligent digital services for government use cases
• Translate business, policy, and operational requirements into solution designs, technical specifications, and implementation plans
• Build and maintain backend services for model pipelines, prompt workflows, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions, APIs, integrations, and evaluation scripts
• Conduct model and solution testing to assess accuracy, reliability, robustness, safety, bias, and fitness-for-purpose
• Support implementation of responsible AI controls, including guardrails, human oversight, audit logs, access controls, and explainability measures
• Work with DevOps, cybersecurity, data, and platform teams to deploy AI solutions securely on approved government environments, including GCC where applicable
• Support monitoring of deployed solutions for model drift, hallucination risks, performance degradation, operational errors, and security concerns
• Assist in risk reviews, security compliance activities, vulnerability assessments, remediation tracking, and audit documentation
• Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and optimisation for AI solutions across development, UAT, staging, and production environments

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related IT field
• 1–2 years of experience in AI engineering, machine learning engineering, data science, software engineering, or a related technical role
• Hands-on experience developing backend services, APIs, or integrations supporting AI-enabled, enterprise, or government digital services
• Strong programming experience in Python, with familiarity in API development, testing, and common AI/ML libraries or frameworks
• Experience with large language models, prompt engineering, embeddings, vector databases, RAG, or AI agent workflows
• Understanding of MLOps/LLMOps, model evaluation, monitoring, and production support practices
• Understanding of responsible AI, data protection, security, and risk management considerations in a government context
• Experience with cloud environments such as AWS, GCC, or other approved enterprise platforms
• Familiarity with CI/CD, DevSecOps, and version control
• Good communication and documentation skills, able to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience implementing AI-enabled solutions in government, public sector, or regulated industry environments is a plus
• Exposure to AWS AI/ML services, GCC environments, SHIP-HATS, GitLab CI/CD, or similar secure delivery platforms is a plus
