Work from home · NSW, QLD or VIC · Two positions

The firm

We act on commercial mortgage advances throughout Australia for non-bank lenders. We have built a premium reputation over 25 years and are known for our expertise in our field.

We are a virtual firm. We keep a small office in North Sydney, but the practice runs on Actionstep, Google, DocuSign, PEXA and other cloud-based applications, and this is a work-from-home position.

The role

You will run commercial mortgage advance matters with the support of a paralegal, supervised by a Special Counsel. Every team is one Special Counsel, one to three Associates, and one paralegal per Associate.

We are looking for solicitors with one to four years’ post-admission experience who hold a current practising certificate in New South Wales, Queensland or Victoria. Prior mortgage or property finance experience is a huge advantage but not essential — we will train you into it.

What you will earn

A base salary of $100,000 plus superannuation, paid weekly.

In addition a fee share of 22–26% of the fees attributable to your own time entry and to the paralegal you instruct, calculated and paid weekly. Your rate within that band is set by your supervising Special Counsel and rises as you need less supervision. You should be at 26% within 6 months.

Annual gross earnings of $100,000–$150,000 plus superannuation, and more depending on how much work you choose to take on. We will strive to help you reach your fee-earning goals.

Fee share is paid weekly (on top of your base salary).

We pay for and arrange your computer, practising certificate, professional indemnity insurance, mandatory continuing legal education, limitation of liability.

How we work

Working from home, on advance work, with a Bluetooth headset, gives you back the two hours a day you would otherwise spend commuting — and the flexibility to structure your day around what matters to you. We built the firm this way deliberately: maximum flexibility, the least possible stress, and the highest possible paycheck.

You need to be contactable by telephone for the majority of business hours. You may work overseas, provided the time zones are compatible so you can take calls and answer email during Australian business hours.

Four weeks’ annual leave, two of which are taken when the firm closes over Christmas and New Year. You can take more in consultation with your Special Counsel.

AI

We are at the forefront of the profession in putting AI to work in legal practice. AI already assists with file opening, searches, document review and drafting support, and we are extending it every month.

You will be trained in it as part of your onboarding and as the tools develop. You do not need any prior experience with AI — but you do need to be willing to learn. Everything produced with these tools is settled and signed off by a solicitor in the ordinary way, and you will be taught where the tools help and where they must not be relied on.

We have found AI is not only powerful for agentic work but also for legal insight on the facts, particularly files that are complicated. It is like having an experienced senior solicitor with you at all times. We believe this is an exciting and essential element in your career advancement.

The leverage is real, and you will get the benefit of it in your fee share and legal career development.

Support

The work is heavily systemised. Our paralegals and our AI tools do the administrative work — file opening, searches, chasing documents. We have a dedicated bookkeeper for billing and trust accounts and another for disbursements and receipts, and Australian and Filipino paralegals who assist with compliance and administration.

Special Counsel and Associates collaborate closely through WhatsApp groups, email and conference calls. Questions get answered quickly.

Progression

The structure is designed to push work down. Associates are incentivised to delegate to paralegals, and Special Counsel to delegate to Associates. You are given more and more responsibility, your earning power increases with it, and the path leads to Special Counsel.

Apply

Submit your resume and a short covering note through Seek.

About Bransgroves Lawyers

Sydney, NSW, Australia

We specialise in mortgage law, asset protection and commercial litigation.

For the first half of the 2000s we specialised in acting on mortgage enforcements and advances for private lenders and mortgage funds. During this time construction finance and private loans formed a large part of our practice.

Over the course of the second half of the 2000s, we came to the attention of larger institutional lenders, who began to brief us on their more complex advances, enforcement and priority work. We also established one of the largest valuer negligence practices in the country.

As part of the fallout from the GFC in 2009 Bransgroves began to receive instructions from originators and aggregators in their disputes with wholesale funders.

Since 2011 our work in assisting lenders with their security documentation and underwriting procedures led to our offering a comprehensive compliance consultancy for retail mortgage funds.

Our practice now includes all of the above services.
