Join Queensland Ambulance Service as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) and play a critical role in supporting the Queensland community during medical emergencies. No two days are the same - Whether you’re providing first-aid advice during Triple Zero (000) calls or coordinating ambulance crews, you’ll receive high-level training through QAS to develop your skills to effectively provide Frontline Operational support in the healthcare sector.

About the role

The Emergency Medical Dispatcher role includes two main functions that you will be trained in -

Call-taking

Be the first point of contact for people during emergencies by answering Triple Zero (000) emergency calls.

Provide critical pre-arrival advice to callers while arranging help for Queenslanders during emergency situations.

Assist callers in a structured and supportive environment using established scripted protocols.

Record accurate and critical details to support dispatchers and paramedics.

Dispatching

Organise and coordinate multiple ambulance crews across Queensland through radio communication

Operate a multi-screen computer system, where you’ll manage responses multiple incidents.

Engage your technical skills in real-time Computer Aided Dispatch systems.

Co-ordinate non-urgent patient transport services with healthcare facilities and practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

Ability to work full-time on a rotating roster (Generally 4 days on, 4 days off – subject to change), in a fast-paced team environment that provides 24/7 coverage (including nights, public holidays and weekends) within one of our communication operations centres across the state.

Complete training for Call-Taking and Dispatching that is provided by QAS. Once obtained, each shift will focus on one function.

Demonstrated experience in engaging strong communication and active listening skills.

Ability to de-escalate high-stress calls with empathy, calmness, and leadership.

Works well in a team and values collaborative working styles.

Solid customer service focus in fast-paced environments.

Exposure to technical systems and ability to learn new systems quickly.

Proven ability to incorporate feedback and receptiveness to ongoing self-improvement.

Ability to problem-solve and make decisions while under pressure.

Mandatory requirements

Ability to attend and complete an in-person 7-week training program based in Brisbane (Travel and accommodation available for eligible candidates)

Ability to commit to working on a 24/7 roster (Generally 4 days on & 4 days off)
