Environmental sustainability relies on precision execution at the frontline of resource recovery. Play a definitive role in preserving the iconic Adelaide Hills biosphere by optimising waste-to-resource operations for a leading regional authority.
The Opportunity
The Adelaide Hills Region Waste Management Authority (AHRWMA) is a forward-thinking regional body committed to delivering sustainable waste management and resource recovery solutions across South Australia's pristine regional hubs. Operating within a highly regulated Environment Protection Authority (EPA) framework, the Authority balances essential infrastructure management with a strict commitment to the local circular economy.
As South Australia continues to lead the nation in resource diversion and environmental management, this position offers an experienced heavy plant professional the opportunity to step into a vital, community-facing role. Aligning with an organisation that prioritises safety, team synergy, and environmental preservation, you will play a hands-on part in transforming waste management into viable sustainability outcomes.
Key Benefits

- Operational Stability: Secure a stable, full-time career path within a highly respected regional authority featuring structured, lifestyle-friendly hours.
- Equipment Autonomy: Take command of a modern, diverse fleet of heavy earthmoving plant, showcasing your technical mastery on a daily basis.
- Collaborative Culture: Join a dedicated regional operations team that champions a progressive, zero-harm safety culture and values individual accountability.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Landfill Operations Supervisor, you will ensure daily landfilling operations are executed with total technical and compliance precision.
- Execute Technical Plant Operation: Safely and efficiently operate a modern fleet of heavy machinery, including wheel loaders, excavators, articulated dump trucks, crushers, and specialised landfill compactors.
- Optimise Resource Recovery: Proactively identify and divert recyclable, reusable, or recoverable materials from the waste stream, ensuring maximum diversion from landfill.
- Govern Site Compliance: Maintain strict alignment with daily operational protocols to ensure unwavering compliance with EPA licence conditions and environmental standards.
- Navigate Asset Maintenance: Orchestrate daily machinery pre-starts, routine maintenance, and safety audits to ensure fleet reliability and operational longevity.
- Facilitate Community Engagement: Provide high-calibre customer service, clearly guiding site visitors and commercial clients on correct waste separation and disposal vectors.
- Maintain Environmental Housekeeping: Manage general site presentation and aesthetics through proactive manual and mechanical litter extraction strategies.
About You
You are a highly reliable, disciplined professional who brings heavy earthmoving experience, structural problem-solving capabilities, and a collaborative work ethic to complex outdoor operations.
- Technical Earthmoving Capability: Proven experience operating heavy plant (ideally backhoes, loaders, excavators, bulldozers, or compactors), backed by relevant plant ticketing or demonstrated competence.
- Safety Leadership Mindset: A deeply ingrained personal commitment to Work Health & Safety (WHS) management systems, active hazard reporting, and strict duty of care principles.
- Interpersonal Fluency: Strong communication skills with a track record of delivering positive customer service and maintaining productive relationships with co-workers and contractors.
- Operational Resilience: The organisational capability to work autonomously or as part of a team, managing multiple tasks efficiently under shifting site demands.
- Desirable Expertise: A practical mechanical aptitude, paired with chemical or asbestos awareness training, will be viewed as a significant advantage.
- Logistical Prerequisites: Readiness to satisfy a mandatory National Police Clearance and a Functional Capacity Assessment, alongside the flexibility to occasionally work rotating shifts across other regional resource recovery sites.
