Legal Counsel - Perth, WA | Permanent | Commercial & Projects Focus
An opportunity has arisen for a commercially minded Legal Counsel to join a leading Australian organisation operating across the mining and resources sector.
Working as part of an established legal function this role will partner closely with commercial, operational and project teams - providing practical legal advice across complex contracts and major project activities.
This would particularly suit a lawyer with a background in construction, projects, mining or engineering who is looking for a hands-on in-house role with strong exposure to the commercial and operational side of the business.
The Role
You will provide legal and commercial support across a diverse portfolio of mining and project activities, including:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts including mining services, construction, supply, procurement and subcontract agreements
- Providing practical advice on contractual and commercial risk
- Supporting tendering, contract negotiations and project mobilisation
- Working closely with commercial, operational and project teams throughout the contract lifecycle
- Advising on contractual rights, obligations, variations and claims
- Supporting dispute avoidance and resolution
- Assisting with governance, compliance and broader corporate legal matters as required
- Engaging with external legal advisers where appropriate
- Building strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation
About You
You will be an Australian-admitted lawyer with experience gained either in-house or within a construction/projects practice.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Approximately 3–7 years' post-admission experience, although candidates outside this range with relevant experience are encouraged to apply
- Experience across construction, mining, resources, engineering or major projects
- Strong commercial contract drafting and negotiation capability
- Exposure to EPC, EPCM, construction, mining services, procurement or supply agreements would be highly regarded
- A practical and commercially focused approach to legal advice
- The ability to communicate effectively with both legal and non-legal stakeholders
- An interest in working closely with operational and commercial teams rather than operating purely as a technical legal adviser
This could also be an excellent opportunity for a construction/projects lawyer currently in private practice who is considering a move in-house and wants greater exposure to commercial decision-making and project delivery.
