More than 2.7 million people across New South Wales rely on us every day for the supply of safe and reliable power to their homes and businesses. We employ more than 1,700 people across our catchment, making us one of the largest employers in Sydney’s Greater West.

We need talented people who are ready for challenge and growth and value a sense of care and belonging. Why? Because our vision is to lead the way with smarter energy solutions. Play your part in helping us to put the customer first and transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for us all.

About the role

We're looking for a Senior Design Engineer to lead the design and delivery of substation electrical designs and supporting systems across regulated and unregulated projects. This role sits within the Electrical Design Team and focuses on substation electrical (secondary) design, including the integration of protection, control, communications and SCADA systems into high-voltage substations and related energy infrastructure.

You will bring extensive experience in substation electrical (secondary) design, strong technical leadership capabilities, and the ability to translate complex technical challenges into practical business outcomes. Experience across both secondary and primary substation design would be advantageous.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality designs for substations, protection, SCADA and energy storage systems.
  • Embed Safety in Design, environmental sustainability and climate resilience into design activities.
  • Prepare project scopes, technical specifications and procurement packages.
  • Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and operational integration.
  • Develop and maintain future-ready standards that support electrification, DER hosting and smart grid outcomes.
  • Drive adoption of emerging technologies, including digital substations, advanced protection schemes and BESS integration.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost, improve performance and support sustainability objectives.
  • Peer review and certify critical design deliverables to ensure quality, consistency and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including Asset Management, Planning, System Operations, Field Operations, Customer Network Solutions and the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office.
  • Engage with consultants, suppliers, construction partners, NSPs, large customers, developers and industry bodies.
  • Mentor and develop technical capability within the design team.
About you

You’re an experienced electrical design professional with strong technical judgement, a future-focused mindset and the ability to lead complex design outcomes in a changing energy landscape.

You bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, enjoy working across multidisciplinary teams, and are confident balancing innovation, compliance, safety and commercial outcomes.

You will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 8–10 years’ experience in high-voltage substation design.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant standards, including AS 2067 and IEC 61850.
  • Experience in BESS design, protection and/or SCADA.
  • Strong experience applying innovative technologies to improve design efficiency and grid reliability.
  • The ability to lead and collaborate across engineering, project management and operations teams.
  • A current C class vehicle licence.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Chartered Professional Engineer accreditation, or the ability to attain it within 12 months.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Power Systems, Energy Systems or Renewable Energy Systems.
  • Green Card WorkCover Induction for Construction Work.
Why join us?
