The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Strategic Advisor to provide a critical role in support of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Community Operations.

About the Business Unit

Community Operations is a division within the Corrections Victoria responsible for the direction, management and operation of Victoria's Community Correctional Services (CCS) in more than 35 locations across Victoria. Community Operations ensures that offenders are safely managed and supervised on orders issued by the courts and the Adult Parole Board, including Community Correction Orders, Parole Orders and Post Sentence Supervision Orders.

About the Role

Through fostering a network of strong relationships with key staff across Community Operations (especially its Executive leadership team), Corrections Victoria, other areas of the department and with other government departments and agencies, the Strategic Advisor provides advice and briefings and leads on key issues relevant to the division. The role manages the workflow within the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Community Operations and ensures the quality assurance of deliverables.

The Strategic Advisor also has line management responsibility for the Statewide HR team, who provide HR functions for the Community Correctional Services frontline, Youth Justice Community and the Justice Officer workforce.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Provide authoritative advice, guidance and feedback to Community Operations staff at all levels on work products submitted to the Deputy Commissioner for approval, including advice on appropriate legislative, recruitment and financial delegations.
  • Manage the workflow within the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Community Operations, including CCS recruitment approval processes.
  • Manage the Statewide HR Team who provide HR admin support for Community Correctional Services. The team also support some HR functions for the Youth Justice Community workforce and the front of house Justice Officer workforce.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Clear capacity to deliver targeted, well-researched, and comprehensive authoritative advice on a range of policy and operational issues.
  • Proven ability to perform effectively under pressure in a dynamic environment, with complex stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead, influence and contribute effectively within a team environment.
  • A detailed knowledge of the criminal justice system, including CCS, Corrections Victoria, the department and key stakeholders.

Qualifications/requirements

  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline is highly regarded
