Rainbow Families Australia is the leading voice for LGBTQ+ families in Australia. Founded in 2015, we are a proudly community led organisation governed by a Board comprised entirely of LGBTQ+ community members.

We connect, support, and empower LGBTQ+ families through community programs, peer support, advocacy, and education. Our work is grounded in the belief that every LGBTQ+ family deserves to live fully, safely, and with access to the services and support they need.

This role sits primarily within our newly funded LGBTQ+ Antenatal Education and Support Program, supported by the NSW Ministry of Health over three years. It also supports Rainbow Families' broader NSW events program. It is an exciting opportunity to join a small, passionate team and play a central role in programs that make a direct and meaningful difference to LGBTQ+ families.

Purpose of the Position

The Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, administration, and delivery of the LGBTQ+ Pregnancy Support Program, as well as coordination of Rainbow Families' NSW community events program and coordination of our Antenatal Education program. This includes coordinating antenatal and newborn care education classes, facilitating the fortnightly Pregnancy Support Group, managing participant registration and communications, coordinating NSW community events such as Mardi Gras festival events, Family Pride, Halloween Disco, and the Making Rainbow Families Seminar, and supporting program evaluation and reporting.

Hours of Work

Part time, 0.4 FTE (15 hours per week). Due to the nature of the role, fortnightly evening work and occasional weekend work will be required.

Location

NSW. This is a hybrid work from home role. The successful candidate must be based in NSW and available to attend in-person program delivery in Sydney as required.

Key Responsibilities

1. Pregnancy Support Program

Coordinate the scheduling, logistics, and delivery of eight half-day education classes per year

Facilitate the fortnightly Pregnancy Support Group (20 sessions per year, fortnightly evenings), delivered primarily online via Zoom

Manage participant registration including waitlists, confirmations, and pre-class communications

Prepare and distribute participant materials, resource packs, and digital handouts prior to each class and support group session

Coordinate and brief facilitators and guest specialists for support group sessions and antenatal classes

Set up and manage hybrid delivery technology (Zoom, projector, audio etc) for all sessions

Maintain a live directory of LGBTQ+ affirming local health district services across NSW and facilitate warm referrals for participants

2. NSW Community Events

Plan, coordinate and deliver Rainbow Families' NSW community events program, including Mardi Gras festival events, Family Pride, Halloween Disco, Resilience Camp and the Making Rainbow Families Seminar

Liaise with community members, vendors, speakers, suppliers, and all relevant internal and external stakeholders across event logistics

Ensure all logistical requirements are accurately documented, communicated, and managed to a high standard

Coordinate volunteers for events, providing clear briefings and on-the-day support

Provide hands on assistance at events, including occasional weekend events

Produce post event reports, participant evaluations, and analysis to support continuous improvement

Support the Marketing Coordinator with the promotion of events to maximise community participation and organisational impact

Manage event budgets responsibly and transparently, in accordance with Rainbow Families' financial policies

3. Community Engagement

Respond to participant and community enquiries via phone, email, and social media in a timely and culturally responsive manner

Promote the antenatal program and community events through Rainbow Families' email newsletter, social media channels, and community networks, working closely with the Marketing Coordinator

Build and maintain referral relationships with LGBTQ+ affirming IVF clinics, fertility specialists, obstetricians, GPs, midwives, and community organisations across NSW

Support participants to connect with the broader Rainbow Families community, including the New Parents' Group, playgroups, and other programs

4. Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

Administer pre and post event surveys, and compile participant feedback data

Track and record attendance, demographics, and referral data for all classes and support group sessions

Produce post event reports for community events and contribute to grant acquittals as required

Support the Executive Officer in preparing program and financial acquittal reports

5. Stakeholder Relationships

Develop and maintain strong relationships with clinical guest speakers, venue partners, event suppliers, and LGBTQ+ community organisations across NSW

Maintain and establish connections with like minded community groups to support peer parent engagement across urban and regional communities

Represent Rainbow Families at relevant community events, sector forums, and referral network meetings

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Demonstrated understanding of the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ families

Experience coordinating and facilitating education programs, community programs, or events in a community services, health, or NFP setting

Strong organisational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage with sensitivity and cultural competency

Experience with hybrid (in person and online) event and program delivery, including Zoom or equivalent platforms

Ability to work collaboratively within a small team and build effective relationships with a range of external stakeholders

Ability to work fortnightly evenings and occasional weekends as required

Current NSW Working with Children Check and National Police Check (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement)

Highly Desirable

Lived experience as part of a rainbow family

Background in community health, social work, midwifery, nursing, or allied health

Experience facilitating peer support groups or community education programs

Knowledge of the NSW health system, including local health district services and referral pathways

Experience in event management, including volunteer coordination and supplier liaison
