The Company
This is a large, established global organisation with a significant Australian presence and a strong reputation in its sector. The business operates at considerable scale, with a professional corporate environment and complex operations supported by teams across technology, finance and other specialist functions.
Based in the Brisbane CBD, the organisation is continuing to invest in its technology and data capability as it looks to improve how information supports decision-making across the business. It is an environment with the scale and complexity to offer genuinely interesting data challenges, while remaining small enough locally for the right person to have visibility, ownership and a meaningful impact.
The Role
This is an initial 6-month fixed-term contract for a Senior Data Engineer who will help the organisation improve how data is brought together, governed and used across the business, with the potential for the engagement to extend to 9 months.
Working primarily within Microsoft Fabric, you will bring together structured and unstructured data from across multiple sources, improve its quality and integrity, and establish repeatable processes for how data is ingested, cleaned, validated, transformed and made ready for reporting.
This is not simply a pipeline-building role. You will help establish practical data frameworks, definitions and standards that can remain within the business beyond the engagement, while working directly with stakeholders to understand what information they need and whether the underlying data can reliably support it. The longer-term objective is to create trusted data foundations for better Power BI reporting, analytics and future AI initiatives.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Building and maintaining data pipelines into Microsoft Fabric
- Establishing logical Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers using medallion architecture principles
- Assessing structured and unstructured information across multiple business sources
- Ingesting, cleaning, validating and transforming data into trusted, reporting-ready datasets
- Identifying issues around data quality, duplication, accessibility and definition
- Establishing repeatable data quality standards and validation processes
- Developing data dictionaries and documenting data definitions, lineage, ownership and usage
- Helping establish practical data governance processes and supporting the organisation's evolving Microsoft Purview capability
- Building or contributing to Power BI reporting and ensuring underlying datasets are fit for purpose
- Working directly with stakeholders to understand reporting, information and analytics requirements
- Translating complex data challenges into clear, practical language for non-technical stakeholders
- Helping establish broader data strategy, standards and frameworks that can continue beyond the engagement
- Working with internal technology teams to bring additional data sources and integrations into the Fabric environment
About You
You are a senior data professional who is still genuinely hands-on technically but is equally comfortable working directly with the business.
You can sit with a stakeholder who knows the report or information they want but may not understand whether the underlying data can reliably support it. You know how to ask the right questions, identify where the real data problem sits and explain what needs to happen next without disappearing into technical language.
You will be confident enough to challenge poor data practices constructively, practical enough to create structure where frameworks are still developing, and personable enough to establish yourself as a trusted point of contact for data questions across the business.
This role will suit someone who enjoys building the foundations rather than simply inheriting a mature data environment.
Skills & Experience
To be effective in this role, you will likely bring:
- Strong hands-on Microsoft Fabric experience
- Strong data engineering and data integration capability
- Experience designing, building and maintaining modern data pipelines
- Understanding of medallion architecture, including Bronze, Silver and Gold layers
- Strong SQL capability
- Experience working across both structured and unstructured data
- Experience cleaning, validating and transforming data into reporting-ready datasets
- Strong data quality and data governance experience
- Experience developing data dictionaries, definitions and supporting documentation
- Solid hands-on Power BI capability
- Strong stakeholder engagement, requirements gathering and presentation skills
- The ability to translate effectively between technical and non-technical audiences
- The ability to work autonomously, take ownership and create structure in an evolving environment
Experience with Microsoft Purview, data strategy, SharePoint integration, document-based data, Azure data services, OneLake, Databricks, SAP-originated data, finance data or resources and energy environments will be well regarded, though these are not essential requirements.
What's On Offer
- $180,000 + super annualised, pro rata for the initial 6-month fixed-term contract
- Potential for the initial engagement to extend to 9 months
- A senior assignment with genuine ownership and the opportunity to establish data frameworks and foundations
- Hands-on work within a Microsoft Fabric and Power BI environment
- Broad stakeholder exposure and the opportunity to influence how data is understood and used across the organisation
- The opportunity to build data foundations that support better reporting, analytics and future AI initiatives
- Brisbane CBD location with approximately 4 days per week in the office and 1 day working from home
- An environment where you can leave behind practical processes, standards and capability beyond the initial engagement
