Our client, a national peak body representing Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, is seeking an experienced Senior Advisor, Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) to join their Canberra-based team. This is a unique opportunity to influence national health policy and drive meaningful change in reducing the burden of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Working within a values-driven organisation, you will contribute to policy initiatives that support health equity, self-determination, and culturally safe healthcare outcomes.
About the Role
As the Senior Advisor, you will provide high-level strategic policy advice and lead the development of evidence-based policy positions, submissions, briefing papers, and advocacy initiatives. Working closely with government agencies, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders, you will ensure policy responses are informed, practical, and aligned with community priorities and the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of policy papers, submissions, briefings, and advocacy materials relating to ARF and RHD.
- Analyse legislation, policy reforms, and national initiatives impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
- Provide timely, evidence-based advice to senior leaders and internal stakeholders.
- Monitor emerging research, data, and national trends to identify opportunities for policy improvement and reform.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government, community, and health sector stakeholders to support community-led approaches and culturally safe outcomes.
- Represent the organisation in relevant forums, consultations, and stakeholder engagements.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Demonstrated experience in policy development, analysis, and advocacy, preferably within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health or related sectors.
- Strong understanding of the health policy environment and the factors influencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality policy and briefing documents.
- Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with communities, government agencies, and sector partners.
- A commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, cultural safety, and community-led solutions.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in public health, social sciences, health policy, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
