Introduction:
With the office based in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, join a fast-growing Tier 3 construction company on a major upward trajectory with a reputation for design innovation, operational excellence and genuine team culture. This is an opportunity to take ownership of the finance function within a growing $60 million annual revenue construction business.

Construction projects include residential, townhouse developments, multi-storey residential, hotels, offices and warehouses.

The position requires the technical and operational capability of a Financial Controller, together with the ability to look ahead. You will develop reliable forecasts, provide practical commercial insights and contribute financial input to the company’s broader business strategy.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will remain hands-on across reporting, cash flow, compliance, payroll and project accounting while becoming a trusted adviser on financial performance, risk and future growth.

Based on Brisbane’s southside, the company has developed a strong pipeline of work and is investing in its people, systems and operational capability to support further growth.

The culture is practical and fast-moving. Senior leaders remain close to the operation, decisions can be made quickly and the successful Finance Manager will have direct access to the Managing Director.

This is a full-time, office-based position.

The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Managing Director, you will manage the day-to-day financial operations of the business while ensuring accurate reporting, strong cash flow control and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

You will supervise an Accounts Officer and work closely with senior leadership and operational teams across the business.

The role combines hands-on financial control with forward-looking commercial support. You will prepare budgets and rolling forecasts, analyse financial performance and provide clear recommendations to support sound decision-making and business strategy.

Key responsibilities:

> Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic decision-making
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to set financial objectives and monitor progress
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for executive stakeholders and Board reporting
  • Develop forward-looking forecasts and provide practical financial input into broader business strategy
  • Help management understand the financial implications of growth, operational and investment decisions

> Financial Operations

  • Perform and manage the end-to-end month-end close, including journals, accruals, reconciliations and reporting
  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, ensuring integrity across all finance systems
  • Actively manage accounts receivable, accounts payable and invoice approvals

> Budgeting, Forecasting and Reporting

  • Prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts in collaboration with leadership
  • Produce monthly management reports, variance analysis and practical financial insights for the Managing Director
  • Support Board reporting with clear, accurate and timely financial information
  • Maintain forward forecasts that provide management with visibility over expected financial performance, cash requirements and emerging risks

> Cash Flow, Payroll and Cost Management

  • Monitor daily cash flow and prepare short and medium-term cash flow forecasts
  • Manage payroll processing, compliance and reconciliation with financial systems
  • Provide payroll relief when required
  • Track job costs, work in progress and project margins, identifying variances and risks early
  • Review supplier costs, invoices and payment runs to ensure accuracy and cost control

> Compliance, Controls and Audit

  • Prepare and lodge BAS, GST, payroll tax and other statutory returns
  • Ensure compliance with AASB/IFRS, taxation and financial regulations
  • Maintain strong internal controls and audit-ready documentation
  • Coordinate internal and external audits and address findings as required

> Systems and Process Ownership

  • Own and maintain financial systems, including ERP, payroll and inventory integrations
  • Ensure data accuracy, system controls and continuous improvement of finance processes
  • Support system enhancements to improve efficiency and reporting capability
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial workflows, controls and reporting

> People and Process Improvement

  • Provide hands-on supervision and support to the Accounts Officer
  • Share knowledge, review work for accuracy and support capability development within the finance function
  • Ensure finance processes are documented, controlled and monitored
  • Contribute to broader business improvements and strategic financial initiatives
  • Maintain effective relationships with internal teams, accountants, auditors, suppliers and relevant government departments

Requirements:

  • Senior experience as a Finance Manager, Financial Controller or similarly accountable finance professional
  • Experience managing a finance function with end-to-end responsibility
  • Strong hands-on capability across month-end, reconciliations and financial reporting
  • Demonstrated experience in budgeting, rolling forecasts and financial analysis
  • Experience preparing monthly management and Board reporting
  • Strong cash flow forecasting and working-capital management capability
  • Experience tracking job costs, WIP and project margins
  • Hands-on experience with payroll, BAS and compliance reporting
  • Working knowledge of AASB/IFRS requirements
  • Experience implementing or improving internal controls and financial systems
  • Ability to identify financial risks and recommend practical responses
  • Confidence providing financial insights to a Managing Director and senior leadership team
  • Ability to coach and support finance staff
  • Strong relationship-building, planning and organisational skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Proficiency with financial software, ERP platforms and modelling tools
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to the broader team
  • Current Australian driver licence
  • Full Australian working rights

A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field will be highly regarded. CA or CPA qualification is desirable.

Experience within construction, manufacturing or another project-based environment would be advantageous. Experience with Jonas Premier, Power BI, Tableau or similar ERP and reporting platforms would also be beneficial.
