What you'll do:

As a Drill and Blast Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering accurate blast designs and technical support across various mine sites. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve collaborating with stakeholders to select suitable blasting products for diverse conditions while resolving any technical challenges that arise during operations. You will conduct thorough assessments of explosive product quality through detailed inspections and laboratory testing. By liaising with client-based engineers, production teams, consultants, and suppliers, you will help schedule blasting activities efficiently to minimise interruptions. Your analytical skills will be utilised in preparing comprehensive reports on blasting performance as well as conducting review meetings aimed at identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers and support workflow management initiatives led by the Technical Services Manager. Success in this role requires a commitment to safety standards, attention to detail in quality assurance processes, effective communication across departments, and a passion for nurturing professional relationships within an inclusive team environment.

  • Deliver comprehensive blasting engineering services including drill design, charge design, timing design, vibration analysis, and data analytics to optimise site operations.
  • Select appropriate blasting products for varying conditions by consulting with stakeholders and specialist suppliers to ensure optimal performance.
  • Resolve technical challenges related to drill and blast processes efficiently while implementing controls to prevent future issues.
  • Assess the quality of explosive products through rigorous inspections and quality assurance tests such as laboratory experiments, velocity of detonation measurements, and density checks.
  • Liaise closely with client-based engineers, production superintendents, operations teams, consultants, and suppliers to schedule blasting requirements with minimal disruption to mining activities.
  • Develop procedures in partnership with clients' technical teams that enhance the drill and blast process for improved outcomes.
  • Attend planning and production meetings regularly to contribute constructively towards operational strategies and foster mutual trust between departments.
  • Analyse blasting performance at multiple sites by producing daily, weekly, and end-of-month reports; monitor production data associated with blasting activities.
  • Conduct blast review meetings involving quality assurance data analysis, digging sheets evaluation, blast logic assessment, and video reviews to identify areas for further improvement.
  • Mentor junior engineers and vacation students while supporting workflow management and work delegation under the guidance of the Technical Services Manager.

  • Proficiency in mine planning software such as Deswik or Vulcan as well as specialised blasting software including Datablast, BlastLogic, Paradigm or ShotPlus.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively under Safety Health Management Systems (SHMS) ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Proven track record of mentoring junior or graduate engineers through knowledge sharing and supportive leadership practices.
  • Exceptional communication skills enabling you to build sound working relationships with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
