The Administrative Review Tribunal (the Tribunal) is looking for multiple dedicated APS5 First Nations Liaison Officers to join our Accessibility and User-Centred Design team to help strengthen outcomes and service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. In these roles, you’ll champion cultural capability and help shape more inclusive and effective services.
These hybrid positions can be located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney.
Non-ongoing positions can be offered for a period of up to 12 months with the possibility of one extension.
These positions are ‘Identified’ positions which signifies that the roles have a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant/s must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.
Remuneration: The annual salary range for the position is APS5 - $ 85,755 pa - $ 91,809 pa., plus a generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4%.
About the opportunity
First Nations Liaison Officers are part of a team that support community engagements and activities at the national level to partner with First Nations communities and their representatives to raise awareness and improve access to-the Tribunal. You will also contribute to the Tribunals overall cultural capability, cultural safety and Closing the Gap initiatives including the Reconciliation Action Plan.
About you:
The ideal candidates can work with a range of stakeholders, communities, and individuals.
To be successful you will have:
- Well-developed cultural competency and a deep understanding of the issues affecting First Nations peoples and communities.
- The ability to build community engagement and manage relationships in a culturally diverse environment, communicating issues sensitively and effectively to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Demonstrated project management and planning skills, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple competing priorities at once in tight timeframes.
- Demonstrated strong sense of self-awareness, working to foster respect, inclusion, and cultural and psychosocial safety in the workplace.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and apply a solutions-focused innovative, and agile approach to deliver quality timely advice and achieve results.
Essential:
- This is an identified position for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1997
- The Tribunal requires Australian Citizenship as a condition of engagement
- All employees are required to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check and complete a health declaration
Desirable:
- Demonstrated understanding of and/or experience in liaising with First Nations Peoples
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in working on programs and projects relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities

About Administrative Appeals Tribunal
The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) conducts independent merits review of administrative decisions made under Commonwealth laws. We review decisions made by Australian Government ministers, departments and agencies and, in limited circumstances, decisions made by state government and non-government bodies. We also review decisions made under Norfolk Island laws.
The AAT was established by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975 and commenced operations on 1 July 1976.
On 1 July 2015 the Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal and Social Security Appeals Tribunal were merged with the AAT.
