About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced and motivated Technical Services Manager - Service Delivery to join the Central Operations Services (COS): Services Delivery Team.

The Technical Services Manager plays a pivotal role in driving the day-to-day implementation of Technical Support Services (TSS) strategic initiatives across designated areas, particularly the chemical compliance software and services (MyLab). Working closely with senior management and academic leadership, this role ensures the effective delivery of operational and tactical activities that support the University's strategic goals. With deep expertise in at least one of the supported disciplines, the Technical Services Manager acts as both a trusted representative for customers and stakeholders and a strategic partner in shaping the delivery of high-quality technical support services.

Leading the execution of TSS strategic objectives, the Technical Services Manager fosters collaboration and teamwork within their area of responsibility while promoting strong connections across other TSS and professional teams University-wide. A key aspect of the role is developing and mentoring team members, enhancing their technical capabilities and interpersonal effectiveness to build a culture of growth and shared success.

In addition to delivering operational excellence, the Technical Services Manager upholds the highest standards of Work Health and Safety (WHS), ensuring all activities comply with University policies and legislative requirements. Through close collaboration with enabling functions, particularly Health, Safety, and Wellbeing, this role ensures a safe, compliant, and supportive environment for staff and students alike.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide effective leadership, management, delegation, coordination, guidance, and support to team leaders (Senior Technical Officers), including effective division of workload between teams
  • collaborate with the relevant Technical Service Specialist and other subject matter experts, develop consistent systems, process, practices, and procedures to ensure alignment with TSS objectives to enable teams to deliver support services effectively
  • actively manage the University's chemical compliance system and service, including the range of available consumables, supplier catalogues and team service levels
  • oversee the development/implementation of communication strategies and plans to meet requirements of relevant stakeholders across a large responsibility area
  • ensure all the requirements of the technical area and service are, safe and compliant with relevant University policy and legislation
  • develop safety action plans and implement the Safety Management System at the multi-team/multi-facility level and regularly report on progress within TSS and to relevant parties as required
  • actively contribute to the ongoing development of the TSS overall Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and provide BCP coordination for the multi-facility responsibility area, collaborating with other Technical Services Managers to ensure adequate shared BCP resourcing
  • manage the technical areas' approved budget/expenditure. Escalate to the TSS director and the TSS Management Group for any additional funding/resource as required to meet changes in demand or services.

About you

  • bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory, workshop, and/or depot environments including experience in working with large volumes of hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementing relevant safety procedures
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters
  • significant and relevant experience in managing/planning/supporting technical teams to provide services to researchers, along with experience in scaling, troubleshooting, and developing practical classes
  • background in the management of technical environments and will have utilised their experience in introducing policies and procedures related to efficient operational performance and compliance of the technical environment, including work health and safety and other legislative requirements
  • experience in managing a diverse range of stakeholders with distinct requirements
  • experience working within a complex environment
  • people management experience, including managing staff performance and development.
