Make a Difference in the Wheatbelt Community!

Are you a purpose-driven legal professional looking to make a meaningful contribution? The Wheatbelt Community Legal Centre (WCLC) is recruiting for a Senior Solicitor to join the team!

This is a rare opportunity to join a small, passionate, and supportive team delivering vital legal services across the Wheatbelt region. You’ll work closely with the Principal Solicitor and provide advice and support in family law, family violence, minor criminal and civil matters, and criminal injuries compensation.

Why are we different?

WCLC is at the heart of the community. We provide free legal advice, representation, and advocacy to people experiencing disadvantage living across the Wheatbelt. We are dedicated to empowering people in our community and delivering quality and accessible legal services to the Wheatbelt community.

And to support the great work we do, work-life balance is of paramount importance – and is at our core.

Living and working in the picturesque town of Northam

Our centre is based in Northam, a thriving country town in the Avon Valley just over an hour from Perth. With a population of around 7,000, Northam offers a welcoming community, modern amenities, and a relaxed lifestyle surrounded by scenic countryside. It's a perfect base for those seeking balance - professional purpose alongside personal space and connection to country.

About the Role

As a Senior Solicitor, you will:

Undertake the provision of professional, high quality legal advice, assistance and limited representation to clients in areas of family law, family violence matters, minor criminal, civil and criminal injuries compensation matters.

Support the Principal Solicitor to handle complex matters, mentor junior solicitors and restricted legal practitioners, and help lead legal service delivery and CLE efforts.

Undertake and develop delivery of the Outreach and Community Legal Education (CLE) Programs to regional hubs of the Wheatbelt, including delivering services to the magistrate’s court, support and services to local residents, and supporting other staff and volunteers with CLE activities (may include overnight stays on occasion).

Keep up to date with relevant legal developments and procedures by attending professional legal education programs and maintain an understanding of issues impacting the justice system and provide guidance and leadership to Wheatbelt community/stakeholders.

What we’re looking for?

We value legal experience - but more importantly, we’re looking for someone who will contribute to our collaborative, community-focused culture. We're seeking a team member who prioritises team cohesion and brings empathy, curiosity, flexibility, and a strong commitment to social justice. We encourage applicants who meet most of the following:

Eligible to practise law in Western Australia (must hold unrestricted practising certificate)

Demonstrated 5+ years’ experience in the provision of legal service delivery including representation, casework and advice in community-based areas of law, specifically the areas of family law, family violence, criminal law, minor civil and criminal injuries compensation.

Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with clients and other persons from diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a small team environment, including the supervision and support of less experienced or restricted practitioners, and to develop constructive partnerships with other community service providers.

Proficiency in the use of MS Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) to a legal practice and the capacity to quickly acquire competency in the use of Wheatbelt CLC’s client database; and

Current driver’s licence.

Successful applicants will also need a satisfactory National Police Check, Working with Children Check, and working rights in Australia.
