About the Role
The NSW Department of Education is seeking a hands-on, delivery-focused AI Engineering Leader to drive the practical adoption of Artificial Intelligence across one of Australia’s largest education systems.
This role suits a technologist who can both articulate the art of the possible and deliver real-world solutions in a complex, legacy-constrained environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure AI solutions aligned with the Department’s AI Assurance Framework.
• Provide hands-on technical direction across data engineering, model integration, MLOps pipelines, and legacy system modernisation.
• Guide teams on GenAI, RAG pipelines, embeddings, vector search, and copilots within real-world delivery constraints.
• Collaborate with educators, compliance, ICT, and business leaders to ensure safe, responsible, and high-impact AI adoption.
• Mentor engineers and analysts to build AI capability and embed best practices across DevOps/MLOps, monitoring, and responsible AI delivery.

About You
You’re a practical innovator with deep technical credibility and a proven ability to deliver AI solutions in enterprise environments. You’re comfortable writing code and leading teams through ambiguity — balancing innovation, compliance, and delivery discipline.

Skills & Experience

• 10+ years in software or data engineering, including 5+ years delivering AI/ML solutions.
• Expertise in Python, agentic AI frameworks, Azure, and modern data platform architectures.
• Experience in AIOps, responsible AI, and compliance-driven delivery.
• Demonstrated success leading teams in legacy-constrained and resource-limited environments.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable

• Familiarity with education technology or other regulated sectors.
