Apply your sound knowledge of animal biosecurity, livestock diseases and health and welfare issues to ensure strong biosecurity practices in the NT.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries was formed in August 2024 to enable agricultural producers to grow their business and the industry. The department underpins the Territory’s reputation as a supplier of safe and quality agricultural produce through scientific research, strong biosecurity practices and compliance with animal welfare legislation.

The Biosecurity and Animal Welfare team are seeking applicants to fill two ongoing appointments, one in Alice Springs and one in Tennant Creek. Successful applicants that have not nominated a preferred location may be offered either location.

As a Livestock Biosecurity Officer, you will provide biosecurity inspection and certification advice and services to manage risks to the Territory economy, environment and public health and support the development of sustainable agribusiness and economic development of the NT. This involves delivering biosecurity services and advice, and administering legislation relating to the NT Livestock Act, 2008.

You will also be required to participate in biosecurity emergency responses and undertake regular travel to remote locations.

To be successful you require a sound understanding of animal biosecurity, livestock diseases and animal health and welfare issues, supported by extensive knowledge of relevant legislation including the NT Livestock Act, 2008 and well-developed communication skills with the ability to communicate technical and legislative information is essential. A valid NT firearms licences and NT Drivers’ license (manual) or the ability to obtain is also required.

Applicants with qualifications relating to biosecurity, agriculture or animal health will be well received.

In return, you will receive a competitive salary, 12% superannuation, six weeks’ recreation and three weeks’ personal leave, an additional 3 days paid leave over the Christmas shutdown and up to 17.5% annual leave loading. You will also be eligible for flexible work arrangements, career development and the opportunity to develop a rewarding career within the Northern Territory.

Alice Springs (or Mparntwe in the Arrernte language) is the third largest town in the Northern Territory and is situated halfway between Darwin and Adelaide. Situated next to the stunning MacDonnell Ranges and the Red Centre Desert.

Tennant Creek an authentic Outback town situated between Alice Springs and Katherine and is home to over 3,000 people. The regional town offers many benefits of living including exploring Waramungu country, swimming at the Mary Ann Dam, four-wheel-driving through the Davenport Ranges and visiting one of the Territory’s famous natural landmarks, the Devil’s Marbles.
