The Australian cherry and summerfruit industries are significant horticultural sectors, contributing over $500 million to the Australian economy. Both industries share production regions, challenges and opportunities, and there are multiple commonalities from a biosecurity perspective. Both industries are members of Plant Health Australia (PHA) and signatories to the Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed (EPPRD). The Biosecurity Officer has responsibility for the delivery of biosecurity support for the summerfruit and cherry industries. The Biosecurity Officer position will provide biosecurity advice to Cherry Growers Australia Limited (CGA), Summerfruit Australia Limited (SAL) and cherry and summerfruit growers nationally.
This Biosecurity Officer position is a national role, with travel and engagement required in cherry and summerfruit production regions. The role will report to both CGA and SAL CEOs and will:
Undertake industry engagement and consultation, being the primary point of contact for biosecurity related matters.
Prepare and extend documentation to facilitate biosecurity awareness and preparedness.
Coordinate a Biosecurity Project Reference Group, (with CGA R&D subcommittee and SAL Biosecurity subcommittee) and associated activities
Develop, deliver and report on regional biosecurity workshops
Communicate biosecurity updates, and provide advice on biosecurity implications, to both industries
Engage with key stakeholders including Federal and State Government agencies, Hort Innovation, research groups, delivery partners, and other cross-industry projects.
We are looking for someone passionate about the horticulture sector, key competencies for this role include:

Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively across a wide range of communication platforms
Demonstrated people and relationship management skills with ability to develop networks, build genuine relationships and become a trusted connection
Willingness to consult widely and work towards accepted outcomes for industry
Demonstrated capacity to work independently under direction while managing diverse functions and competing priorities
Acting with integrity and professionalism at all times, demonstrating sound business ethics
Tertiary qualifications in agriculture, science or other related discipline are required. Horticulture industry, biosecurity and/or regulatory experience desirable but not essential. Travel is required in this role.
