In office 3 days per week (Sydney) and work from home 2 days per week

This role sits within Digital.NSW in the Identity.NSW Legislative Reform team

About the team

The Identity Legislative Reform team is responsible for delivering on exciting new regulatory reforms and legislative initiatives in the digital identity and verifiable credentials, identity support/remediation and digital identity strategy space. The reforms being developed by the team will continue to put the NSW Government front and centre in leading the protection of identity for the people of NSW. This is particularly important as the people of NSW are sharing and using personal information online at an ever-increasing rate. The team also works closely with all states and territories and the Commonwealth to support the development of national alignment on digital identity policy, strategy and laws.

The role available will be work on developing an identity strategy for all of NSW government and will be involved in extensive engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders across NSW Government agencies. The role also supports an all of government forum for identity initiatives across government and will be involved in the development of regulations and system rules related to digital identity and verifiable credentials system being developed.

Your day-to-day

We are looking for a Senior Policy and Legislation Officer who is curious, takes initiative and has a can-do attitude. The successful candidate will:

  • Undertake research in relation to and analyse and interpret legislation, strategies and policies from NSW and other jurisdictions
  • Support the development of drafting instructions for regulations and consultation on the draft regulations.
  • Prepare quality reports, consultation papers, cabinet submissions, briefs and correspondence.
  • Assist in preparing for stakeholder (internal and external to Government) engagement sessions on an identity strategy and provide support to more senior staff during those sessions.
  • Support inter and intra jurisdictional programs of work and engage closely with peers at all levels across Government.

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience in drafting a range of government documents including drafting instructions, reports, consultation papers, cabinet submissions, briefs, correspondence and speeches.
  • An excellent understanding of how government works and how to get things done using government processes. An understanding of cabinet processes is particularly important.
  • The ability to quickly interpret new information and provide a sound analysis of complex issues, particularly in relation to draft and existing laws and make recommendations to more senior staff.
  • The ability to build and maintain positive relationships and develop networks across whole of government.
  • Excellent understanding of project management, and the ability to identify and mitigate risks to delivery.
  • Relevant skills, experience or tertiary qualifications in law and/or policy development.
