The Role
As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for guiding complex systems through the entire capability lifecycle, from capturing initial requirements and architecting the design, to overseeing integration, testing, and sustainment. You will be the technical 'glue' that ensures all pieces fit together to solve critical mission needs. Working within talented multi-disciplinary teams, your role will be to integrate a diverse range of technologies which will include radio frequency systems, secure networking, large scale computing, cloud, and advanced software deployments. The capabilities you deliver will range from small-scale, bespoke solutions to some of Australia's largest and most complex enterprise systems.
ASD 4 & 5 Systems Engineers Key Duties:
- Contribute to the development and management of system requirements by performing analysis and documenting findings.
- Assist in the creation of systems engineering documentation including system requirements and specifications, interface descriptions, verification and validation plans.
- Execute predefined test procedures and document results to support system verification and validation activities.
- Accountable under routine direction to perform and achieve moderately complex systems engineering work within an integrated workforce.
- Accountable for organising their workflow and seeking advice where required to make decisions relating to their area of responsibility.
- Apply technical engineering knowledge and experience, understand priorities to research, define issues, and suggest corrective actions.
- Take ownership of system design and analysis, ensuring requirements are met and interfaces are clearly defined.
- Develop and manage key systems engineering artefacts, including requirements specifications, design documents, and Verification and Validation (V&V) plans.
- Conduct trade studies on competing technical solutions and present findings to support decision-making.
- Accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex systems engineering work within an integrated workforce.
- Accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility.
- Apply technical engineering knowledge and experience, understand priorities to research, define issues, and implement corrective actions.
ASD 6 Systems Engineers Key Duties:
- Lead the systems engineering effort for complex systems, ensuring all technical requirements are met throughout the entire project lifecycle.
- Develop and manage the System Architecture and design, ensuring a balanced and robust solution that considers security, performance, and sustainability.
- Oversee all Integration, Verification and Validation (IV&V) activities, including the development of the test and evaluation plans.
- Proactively identify, analyse, and manage technical risks, providing mitigation strategies to project leadership.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to ASD 4 & 5 engineers, fostering good engineering practice within the team.
- Operate independently with minimal direction to perform and achieve complex systems engineering work within an integrated workforce.
- Accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility.
- Accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations.
- Apply technical engineering knowledge and experience, understand priorities, define issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing and provide recommendations for consideration.
- Apply best practices for engineering quality, performance, security.
- Contribute to allocation of work, priority setting and development of strategies for small team.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to more junior team members on systems engineering.
- Build productive working relationships with internal stakeholder teams.
ASD EL1 Systems Engineers Key Duties:
- Provide authoritative systems engineering advice and strategic guidance to program leadership, ensuring technical solutions are aligned with ASD's mission and enterprise architecture.
- Lead and coordinate systems engineering activities for major programs, ensuring the application of rigorous, tailored, and defensible engineering processes.
- Establish and manage technical baselines, including overall system requirements, major interfaces, and key performance parameters.
- Direct the resolution of critical system-level issues and manage complex trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical performance.
- Be accountable for the overall technical integrity of the system, including exercising technical regulatory authority delegations where required.
- Responsible for leading systems engineering activities in support of the delivery of major programs and projects across ASD.
- Responsible for planning and management of verification and validation activities across the capability lifecycle.
- Development of key engineering artefacts and plans, including engineering management, V&V, configuration management, technical assurance, and requirements traceability and management.
