About the Role

Supporting General Counsel in the provision of specialist in-house legal services to Fire Rescue Victoria, the work is broad and encompasses contract and commercial law (reviewing and drafting of contractual and relationship agreements), public law, procurement, property, information technology, intellectual property, debt recovery, privacy and Freedom of Information, risk and compliance, advocacy and statutory interpretation.

The position involves extensive internal and external stakeholder engagement, including management and mentoring of legal and non-legal staff and has a regular interface and close working relationship with the Fire Rescue Victoria Executive Leadership Team.

Functional Accountabilities include:

Provide expert and authoritative oral and written legal advice on a diverse range of complex and challenging matters;

Negotiate, draft and settle a range of complex commercial and relationship documents to promote the initiatives, strategic goals and policies of Fire Rescue Victoria and to protect Fire Rescue Victoria’s financial and legal position;

Coordinate external legal advice where required, including briefing external legal firms and/or counsel on specific cases and managing these for Fire Rescue Victoria;

Mentor, coach and provide internal advice to staff on legal matters, including identifying which matters are legal and those that are management decisions and providing expertise to frame the right legal questions and to assist with commercial matters;

Analyse and interpret complex legislation at a high level and provide guidance and direction on Fire Rescue Victoria’s legislative obligations and policy issues.

What you will need to Succeed

To be successful in this position, you will have:

A Law degree, admission as an Australian Lawyer, and a current legal practicing certificate;

Demonstrated experience working in a senior legal role with a focus on public sector and corporate/commercial law;

An ability to manage multiple competing priorities;

The ability and judgment to provide advice and solutions under limited supervision is essential;

Superior drafting and communication skills;

Experience in supervising and mentoring legal and non-legal staff;

Experience in liaising with senior internal and external stakeholders;

In-house experience, expertise in major projects (Desirable)
