Details: Join our energetic Works team at Roads ACT as a Street Sweeping Night Shift Operator and play a vital role in keeping Canberra clean.
Roads ACT is responsible for the management and maintenance of Canberra’s Road network, bridge and footpaths. The Works business unit undertakes predominantly in-housework, providing a 24/7 incident response service, street sweeping, lines and signs, roadside furniture, road grading, concrete and asphalt works and plays a critical front-line role in delivering services that keep Canberra’s infrastructure clean, functional, and safe for the community.
We’re looking for a committed and reliable Street Sweeping Operator to join our Works team in a permanent night shift role. This is a fantastic opportunity to work independently, contribute to community wellbeing, support maintenance and presentation of Canberra’s roads and cycle paths. In this role, you will take pride in operating a modern street sweeping vehicle to ensure tidy and safer streets and stormwater assets for our community.
As a Street Sweeping Operator, you will be expected to carry out duties with a high level of independence and demonstrating strong attention to safety protocols, while maintaining operational records and equipment checks.
Successful applicants will be responsible for operating mechanical street sweeping equipment across scheduled routes during operations, but not limited to:
- Follow assigned routes.
- Complete scheduled cleaning programs.
- Maintain sweeping logs and record completed works.
- Ensuring compliance with WHS standards and traffic management requirements.
The role operates under the supervision of the Street Sweeping Supervisor, who sets direction and priorities for the team.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:
- Visa holders are eligible to apply for both permanent and temporary roles. Those with eligible visas may be considered for permanent employment, while individuals with temporary residency or limited-duration visas may be offered permanent employment for the duration of their visas.
- Current driver’s licence class MR is essential, with a minimum of two years demonstrated tip truck experience or similar within the last five years.
- Traffic controller (TCR) – essential or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.
- Implement traffic control plans (IMP) – essential or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.
- CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry – essential.
- Asbestos awareness card or a willingness to obtain - Asbestos Awareness Training and evidence of completion delivered by a Registered Training Organisation is required before commencement, for further information refer to: Asbestos Awareness Training - WorkSafe ACT - essential.
- 10830NAT - Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention – essential
- HLTAIDO11 – Provide First Aid – essential or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.
- Competent in mobile software applications and the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- This position does require a pre-employment medical.
- This position does not require a Working with Vulnerable People Check.
Applicants are made aware that the essential requirements to be obtained within the listed periods above and are a mandatory requirement to successfully complete the probation and to be appointed permanently to this position.
Roads ACT will support the successful applicant through the training requirements by organising up to two sessions at the cost to Roads ACT. Should additional attempts be required to obtain the applicable license/certificate in the six-month period, the costs to acquire these will be borne by the successful applicant.
Notes: A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
