We would love you to join our supportive, inclusive and collaborative team and help us to recruit, train and manage the dedicated volunteers at Carringbush Adult Education in this 2 day a week role.
Carringbush provides language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills courses as well as community development and support projects to adults from diverse backgrounds, including residents of public housing in the City of Yarra. We aim to improve access, inclusion and participation in education, employment and community activities for local people from diverse backgrounds.
The Volunteer/Literacy Program Coordinator is responsible for the engagement, support, administration and coordination of a diverse team of volunteers at Carringbush Adult Education, including classroom volunteers, conversation volunteers, digital mentors, reading mentors and one-to-one and small group literacy tutors. Volunteer/Literacy Program Coordination involves a range of Key Responsibilities as detailed below. The role of Volunteer/Literacy Program Coordinator is a paid part-time position, requiring a professional level of skill, performance and accountability. Desirable knowledge and skills:
· Teaching, training or tutoring experience in EAL, Adult Literacy and /or Adult Education
· Strong interest in working in CALD community settings
· Ability to support and encourage volunteers to apply their skills, strengths and interests to volunteer roles
· High level interpersonal and communication skills for working with people from diverse backgrounds
· Strong self-management skills, initiative and problem-solving skills
· Ability to manage, coordinate and lead a volunteer team to meet program outcomes
· Effective team member - works cooperatively with staff, volunteers and students
· Ability to work within the professional boundaries of the position
Qualifications:
· Desirable: Qualifications or relevant experience in education/training, volunteer coordination, project management, staff management, administration and/or community sector work with CALD communities.
· Mandatory:
Current Working with Children Check
Current Police Check (less than 6 months)
Key responsibilities:
Volunteer Recruitment
Promote Volunteer Roles and recruit new volunteers
Manage the interview, selection and onboarding process
Volunteer Training
Plan and deliver induction and training for new and ongoing volunteers
Literacy Coordination
Oversee the 1:1 and small group adult literacy classes, interviewing and enrolling students under the ACFE guidelines
Conducting initial assessments and developing learning plans for new referrals
Volunteer Support
Respond in a timely and supportive manner to requests for information, resources and support, especially related to literacy development
Record keeping
Register new volunteers using forms and systems provided and keep volunteer information up to date
Other admin duties as required for the role
Volunteer Recognition and Events
Organise social and celebratory events throughout the year
Volunteer Performance Management
Supervise the progress of volunteers and their ability to meet the requirements of their roles, and identify any areas of improvement
Program Evaluation
Provide informal and formal avenues of feedback for volunteers and document all feedback to act upon
Evaluate the volunteer program with volunteers, staff and stakeholders and implement improvement plans
Staff Communications
In consultation with teachers, match classroom volunteers according to availability and need
Provide information and PD to teachers and staff about using and managing volunteers
Conditions of employment:
· 2 days per week (15.2 hrs) (0.4 FTE) during school terms
· Education Services (Post Secondary) Award Level 12, plus 12 % superannuation, 1.5% Portable Long Service Leave and salary packaging benefits
· 6-month probation period
· Commencing February 2026
