About the Role

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to contribute to the deployment, configuration, and optimisation of digital infrastructure supporting critical AFP capabilities.

Working within the Chief Technology Office (CTO) and in close collaboration with Forensics Command and other ICT teams, the Infrastructure Engineer will play a hands-on role in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure and efficient ICT systems that underpin AFP operations across Australia.

This role is ideal for a technically adept professional who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys complex problem-solving, and is committed to maintaining the integrity and resilience of critical infrastructure systems.

Key Responsibilities

· Deploy and configure ICT infrastructure solutions within the AFP environment.

· Provide technical direction and advice to vendors performing professional services on behalf of the AFP.

· Design and configure AFP infrastructure to support business applications and services.

· Offer technical leadership in small team environments to ensure effective system integration and operational support.

· Produce clear and detailed documentation, diagrams, and procedures to facilitate knowledge transfer and continuity.

· Manage files, records, and system artefacts in accordance with AFP governance and documentation standards.

· Support compliance with security assessments, system configuration management, and change control processes.

Core Technical Skills

Mandatory experience:

· Design, configuration, and support of Microsoft Windows-based ICT infrastructure and associated services (e.g., Active Directory, ADFS, IIS/web services).

· Strong capability in deploying and managing Linux-based systems (Ubuntu, RHEL).

· Scripting and automation using PowerShell or equivalent.

· Administration of virtualised environments (VMware vSphere).

· Database management and optimisation (Microsoft SQL Server, including version upgrades, consolidation, and virtualisation).

· Storage and backup administration using Dell Technologies (Networker, Isilon).

· Experience adhering to security, configuration, and documentation standards in the Federal Government sector, particularly within national security environments.

Highly desirable experience:

· Advanced Linux system management (Ubuntu / RHEL using Satellite).

· Infrastructure automation and orchestration (Ansible or equivalent).

· Containerisation and container orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

· Security management tools and practices including WSUS, SCCM, Nessus, Nmap, SELinux, and firewall management.

Working Arrangements

· The position is based in Canberra, ACT, with a hybrid work model requiring at least four days per week on site to support team collaboration and stakeholder engagement.

· The role reports into the Chief Technology Office (CTO) – ICT Operations Division.
