Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.

As an office of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Funds in Court (FIC) supports the Senior Master, who holds funds, investments, and assets, principally for people with a disability. FIC works to ensure safe and effective investment of clients' funds at low cost, and to use the funds in a manner that responds to clients' diverse needs and aspirations. FIC is a self-funded, not-for-profit division of the Court. that also manages funds paid into Court.

About the Role

The Senior Tax Accountant is a key member of the Accounting and Taxation Team and is responsible for providing support to meet the tax compliance obligations of FIC in a timely and accurate manner.

In addition to providing comprehensive advice and reporting to key stakeholders, this position also manages communication with FIC Clients, Australian Taxation office (ATO) and regulatory bodies and as required.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Maintaining a current individual Tax Practitioners Board registration - holds primary responsibility for the provision of tax advisory and managing clients' taxation obligations on behalf of the Senior Master.
  • Assisting the Accounting and Tax Manager to manage the collation of required information, tax calculations and ensure the accuracy of information for the preparation and lodgment with the ATO of the tax returns required by the ITAA 1997 and 1936 in respect of the funds, investments and assets held by the Senior Master to ensure timely and efficient compliance with all statutory requirements.
  • Assisting the Accounting and Tax Manager to manage all aspects of taxation compliance requirements for FIC in a timely, accurate and efficient manner; includes but not limited to:
  • Supervising the preparation and lodgment of over 6,500 Trust Taxation returns
  • Overseeing the issuing of annual Trust Taxation Statements
  • Reviewing the preparation and lodgment of over 300 Individual Taxation returns
  • Computation of non-resident and resident withholding calculations
  • Managing monthly ATO Business Activity Statements and Instalment Activity Statements
  • Managing the allocation and finalisation of payments out of Court, including tax calculations and the processing of final trust distributions to clients in a timely manner.

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting / Tax
  • CPA or CA qualified would be highly regarded.
  • Maintain a current Tax Practitioners Board registration would be highly regarded
  • Knowledge and understanding of taxation law, its interpretation and application by the ATO, particularly with respect to the taxation of trust funds, the AAS and other prevailing accounting standards.
  • Previous experience in the trustee or related industry would be highly regarded.
