In this role, you will undertake complex, major or urgent legal matters and provide expert authoritative advice to external clients and Crown Law staff. You will ensure the delivery of a high quality, cost effective legal services in accordance with Crown Law's client service charter.
About the team
The legal work handled within the WorkCover Team includes:
• Undertaking the defence of complex workers' compensation claims on behalf of the Crown, Crown Corporations and Instrumentalities in relation to the following areas of law:
- Workers' Compensation Act 1990
- WorkCover Queensland Act 1996
- Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003.
• Providing high quality advice in respect to matters arising out of the areas of law referred to above, including, but not limited to, indemnity, liability, quantum, and evidence, settlement, costs or other aspects.
• Providing high quality advocacy and litigation work in respect to matters arising out of the areas of law referred to above, including, but not limited to, appearing as Counsel on interlocutory applications and at compulsory conferences, drafting pleadings, affidavits and other court documents.
• In addition to the above Workers' Compensation legislation, you should be familiar with or have knowledge of the following legislation:
- Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002
- Motor Accident Insurance Act 1994
- Civil Liability Act 2003.
• Have extensive knowledge of the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules and be familiar with the rules of the Federal and High Court.
• Preparing and assisting in the provision of:
- high quality advice, submissions and correspondence in complex and sensitive matters for consideration at Ministerial, Cabinet or inter-governmental levels
- Ministerial briefing notes
Your key responsibilities
• Reporting to an Assistant Crown Solicitor, provide up-to-date, expert and authoritative professional legal advice in relation to the specialist field of law of the WorkCover Team to all client areas within the Queensland Government.
• Ensure that your personal productivity and revenue targets of 6 billable hours per day are met.
• Work with multiple teams and provide expert legal knowledge and skills on complex and sensitive legal questions to major government clients on a fee for service basis.
• Make good, but often difficult decisions, based on significant experience.
• Settle advice work in your area of expertise as required by the Assistant Crown Solicitor.
• Support the strategies contained in the business pillars of Crown Law.
• Participate in and maintain a proactive approach to self-development, including the achievement of the required CPD points each year.
