Our Next Management Accountant
The Management Accountant will support in coordinating monthly and quarterly budget reviews, providing guidance to budget managers, and contributing to the overall financial reporting process. You’ll be an integral part of a team that provides valuable services to the local community. Your contributions will directly support Gunnedah Shire Council’s mission to maintain accurate, transparent, and efficient financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Coordinator Management Accounting in co-ordinating the monthly/quarterly budget reviews and variance comments by Budget Managers in Councils budget management system.
- Provide guidance to Budget Managers on how to read and understand their budgets in Councils financial and budgeting systems to enable correct costing of revenues and expenses.
- Maintain data in the Project Portal (e.g. linking of work orders, update of financial fields and descriptions)
- Contribute to the upkeep and accuracy of the Project spreadsheet.
- Process monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc Management Accounting journal entries.
- Assist with the preparation of final expenditure certificates.
- Creation and maintenance of work orders for capital projects and operational financial tracking
- Assist in providing financial information against budget, actuals, commitments, and project spend to Manager Finance, Budget Managers and Executive Leadership Team.
- Provide assistance to the Co-ordinator – Management Accounting in the preparation of Council’s annual budget.
- Assist in the loading of annual budgets into Council’s budget management system.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of Councils Long Term Financial Plan and associated modelling and scenario planning.
- Support the Co-ordinator – Management Accounting in the review and maintenance of relevant policies, management directives, systems, processes and procedures
- Ensure complete and accurate financial records are captured and maintained within the appropriate systems and in accordance with legislation, Council policies, management directives and procedures.
- Keep up to date with all relevant local government legislation, Australian Accounting Standards, departmental circulars and other management requirements.
- Training internal users on Budget Management software, Council’s Finance system and other reporting platforms
- Provide quality administration support and relief other Finance staff as required.
Key Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Finance or Business; or demonstrated experience working in a similar role.
- Demonstrated problem solving and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Strong customer service skills and a commitment to proactive communication, with the ability to simplify budgeting and financial obligations and system by Budget Managers and other internal customers.
- Provide accurate and meaningful financial data from Councils financial system for Budget Managers to monitor the progress of Capital Projects
- Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise procedures and processes for activities conducted within the Management Accounting area.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products and demonstrated broad computer literacy.
- A working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities set out in the Workplace Health and Safety Act and the principles of the EEO Act.
- Ability and continued commitment to work according to Councils' policies and Code of Conduct, with or without supervision.
- Current valid NSW Class C Drivers Licence (ongoing employment is conditional on maintaining this).
While not required, desirable characteristics of a successful candidate could include:
- Strong understanding of NSW Local Government Act and the Local Government Code of Accounting Practice & Financial Reporting.
- Knowledge of other areas within finance that can complement the ability to provide Management Accounting support to the organisation (e.g. payroll, accounts payable, bank reconciliation etc.)
- Understanding of the diverse range of business units within a Local Government Environment
