About the team
We are looking for driven and passionate people who want to make a difference to the NSW building industry and the lives of consumers. If you have an interest in public policy or building regulation, come join us in the Building Policy team at Building Commission NSW.
The Building Policy team is responsible for delivering law reform and strategic policy to progress the NSW Government's building agenda. To deliver these reforms the Building Policy team engages with a wide range of stakeholders across industry, the community, and other government agencies to develop a comprehensive evidence base to inform Government decisions on housing and building industry issues.
The role provides opportunities to solve complex policy problems, make changes to legislation and work on other innovative policy related projects within Building Commission NSW. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a strong and transferrable public policy skillset. These roles are regulatory policy roles (they are not customer service or administrative roles) but we are keen to hear from you if you have relevant experience that could transfer to Building Policy, included but not limited to any of the following:
- data analysis
- operational roles in a regulatory environment
- law
- social research
- economic analysis
- government / industry liaison
- architecture, planning, or building certification.
While existing knowledge of NSW building laws is desired, it is not mandatory as you will learn the subject matter on the job. We welcome applicants from all educational and professional backgrounds who have strong problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn, and a passion to serve the NSW community.
Key responsibilities:
- Working across Government, industry and the community to develop policy and legislative reform proposals.
- Developing a comprehensive evidence base to inform Government decisions on housing and building industry issues.
- Support the Minister to develop and implement legislation and Cabinet Submissions.
- Lead engagement with industry and community stakeholders to find opportunities to work together to address issues across the construction sector.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Strong research, critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Strong written and oral communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to work in a high-volume environment.
- The ability and/or experience in writing briefing notes, discussion papers and having input into the development of submissions to the Minister and Cabinet.
- A solid understanding of government policy and processes.
- A collaborative nature and enjoys working in a team.

Salary Grade 7/8, with the base salary for this role starting at $113,574 base plus superannuation
