The Role

As an APS 6 Commercial Officer within the Department of Defence, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of commercial and procurement outcomes aligned with departmental and government policy. Working closely with the Commercial Manager, you will contribute to the development, negotiation, and management of contracts, ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks and providing sound commercial advice to decision-makers.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Drafting and reviewing contract documentation
• Supporting procurement planning and risk management activities
• Ensuring probity, transparency, and alignment with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules

You will also assist in financial management tasks such as tracking contract deliverables, preparing financial reports, and identifying efficiencies to support sustainable project outcomes. This role requires strong engagement with internal stakeholders and industry partners to achieve value for money outcomes that support Defence capability objectives.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team

This position is part of the Commercial team within the Collaborative and Autonomous Systems Project Office (CASPO). The team provides critical contracting, procurement, and probity support to enable the successful delivery of CASPO’s objectives.

You will collaborate with professionals across project management, engineering, testing, operations, and corporate functions in a multidisciplinary environment. The team fosters a supportive and knowledge-sharing culture, ensuring holistic delivery of outcomes.

As a member of this team, you will be exposed to commercial activities involving cutting-edge developmental technologies, including the integration of new Collaborative Combat Aircraft capabilities into the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

We are seeking a motivated and experienced professional with a strong background in government procurement and contracting, ideally within a Defence project environment. • Demonstrated experience in procurement, contracting, and probity
• Sound understanding of public sector financial and procurement processes

A relevant tertiary qualification or practical experience in law, business, procurement, or a related field is highly desirable. Prior experience as a Commercial Officer and familiarity with Defence’s unique operating environment will be highly regarded.
