Applicants will be assessed on merit, including skills, experience, and potential. A postgraduate qualification in cancer nursing is required for ongoing appointment. If the preferred candidate does not hold a one, a fixed-term role may be offered, with ongoing employment dependent on completing the postgraduate qualification during that time.

Candidates without a postgraduate qualification in Cancer Nursing will be supported through the McGrath Foundation’s Associate Pathway. This program includes tertiary education, clinical supervision, and mentorship from the McGrath Foundation Nurse Clinical Lead team.

The successful candidate will perform the duties of a McGrath Cancer Care Nurse while completing the required education, supported by both the McGrath Foundation and Far West Local Health District.

What You'll be doing

The position provides support, information, and care navigation for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people with a cancer diagnosis, with a particular focus on remote communities within FWLHD.

Work in collaborative partnership with existing FWLHD Cancer Services staff, Aboriginal Health Services (eg Maari Ma) and Primary Health Care providers and multidisciplinary team.

Build and maintain positive relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, Elders and Traditional Owners

  • Provides leadership that facilitates the ongoing development of clinical practice that reflects the McGrath Model of Care.

How to apply
To be considered for this position, please ensure you address the selection criteria in the application as thoroughly as possible:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. (N.B. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), with relevant post-registration qualifications and/or at least 3 years' experience working with patients with cancer.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice in accordance with Registered Nurse Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, build and maintain positive relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Demonstrated ability to critically use patient clinical information to manage and navigate care, provide information and education to patients and carers/family, and escalate clinical concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as a member of a multidisciplinary team, excellent time management and organisational skills with an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communications skills to develop therapeutic relationships with patients, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the LHD with potential for some overnight stays.

About Far West NSW Local Health District

Broken Hill, NSW, Australia

Bordering three states, Far West Local Health District (LHD) covers 194,949 square kilometres in remote NSW. The LHD is sparsely populated, with 62% of its approximately 30,000 inhabitants living in the Silver City of Broken Hill. The remainder of the population live in agricultural towns along the Murray River, in small remote communities of 80-800 people or on stations throughout the LHD. Far West LHD is the most sparsely populated LHD in NSW and has the highest proportion of Aboriginal residents (9.6%).
