Your Role in Keeping Tenterfield Clean, Compliant and Sustainable

Tenterfield Shire Council is seeking a hands-on, safety-focused Landfill Operator to join its Waste team. Based at Boonoo Boonoo Landfill, this role is key to the safe and efficient operation of one of the region’s most important disposal sites.

You’ll be responsible for daily operations on-site — from plant use and maintenance to gate control and site safety — all while ensuring full compliance with EPA regulations and Council policy.

This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives outdoors, operates plant confidently, and enjoys working autonomously in a structured, essential service role.

You’ll report to the Head Waste Disposal Officer and work closely with the broader Waste team.

Possession of a qualification in Waste Management would be highly regarded.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your key responsibilities will include:

Safely operate and maintain excavators

Supporting waste burial, compaction and cover procedures as per Council and EPA standards

Performing site inspections, risk assessments, and reporting any hazards or equipment issues

Managing gate and access control

Ensuring safe disposal practices in waste management

Conducting daily maintenance checks, plant records, and emergency procedures

What You Bring to the Role

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

A current NSW HR driver’s licence

Experience working in landfill or waste operations

Experience operating plant such as excavators with associated competency

The physical capacity to handle manual tasks and general labouring duties

Basic computer literacy and ability to complete forms, safety reports, and records

A commitment to workplace health and safety and environmental responsibility

Strong communication and problem-solving skills

Desirable:

First Aid Certificate

Experience with a variety of heavy machinery and associated competencies

You are punctual, reliable, practical, and able to work both independently and as part of a small, dedicated team. You take pride in your work, value public service, and understand the importance of managing waste safely and efficiently in a regional context.
