We are seeking a highly skilled Security Operations Manager to lead the implementation and management of our organisation's Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system and Security Operations Centre (SOC). This pivotal role will establish and mature a centralised security monitoring and incident response function to strengthen our cyber resilience.

Reporting to the Cyber Security Manager, the Security Operations Manager will collaborate closely with various cybersecurity teams—including security architects, risk advisors, identity and access management specialists, vulnerability management, and threat intelligence—to ensure the SOC is effective, integrated, and aligned with enterprise security goals. This role also coordinates with IT operations, infrastructure, and application teams to embed monitoring and response capabilities across systems while leading a team of analysts and external partners.

Working within a state government organisation having previous government experience would be beneficial as well as someone that has experience setting up a SOC environment. This is an initial 1 year contract that has the potential to extend for a further year.

Day rate: $1100 plus super
Hybrid working: you will be required in the office 50% of the time

Responsibilities:

  • Security Operations Management: Oversee daily SOC operations, ensuring continuous monitoring, detection, triage, and response to security incidents. Manage SIEM platform configuration and tuning, incident response workflows, and stakeholder coordination during events. Drive SOC performance improvements aligned with project goals.
  • Incident Management: Lead swift containment, investigation, and resolution of cybersecurity incidents. Maintain thorough incident documentation and conduct post-incident reviews for ongoing improvement.
  • Incident Response Planning: Develop and maintain incident response plans, ensuring organizational preparedness and compliance with industry standards.
  • Policy and Procedure Development: Design, enforce, and update security policies and procedures to protect digital assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments and vulnerability analyses to identify threats, recommending mitigation strategies to enhance security posture.
  • Security Awareness: Develop and deliver security awareness programs to educate staff and promote a strong security culture.
  • Reporting: Prepare regular reports for senior management on security status, incident trends, risks, and improvement initiatives, supporting data-driven decision-making.

Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Proven Experience: Extensive background managing security operations, including incident response and threat mitigation, with demonstrated leadership of high-performing teams.
  2. Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of security systems such as IDS/IPS and SIEM platforms, with hands-on experience monitoring diverse technologies, networks, and cloud environments.
  3. Risk and Compliance: Experience in risk assessments and mitigation strategies, with a solid understanding of security standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR).
  4. Communication and Leadership: Excellent ability to communicate complex security issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, with strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CEH highly desirable.
