The role sits in the Data Capability Exchange Section of the Chief Technology and Data Officer Branch in the CIO Division of the Enterprise Transformation Group.
The Data Capability Exchange Section is a collaborative and driven team of professionals, supporting and facilitating the management of AEC data assets throughout the data lifecycle. We also lead the Information and Data Management Strategy (IDMS), which aims to ensure AEC continues to deliver best practice in election management and become a modern data-driven agency by investing in our people, processes and technologies to make data use a cultural norm.
We do this through our key service offerings:
- Data and AI Governance - development and implementation of data and AI strategy, policies and governance
- Data Analytics & Visualisations - support and enable informed decision making through our tailored and personalised data insights and visualisation services.
- Data Engineering - managing and improving usability of AEC's data assets throughout the data lifecycle.
- Geospatial Services - support and facilitate use of geographic and location-based datasets to inform AEC operations
We actively engage with our business areas to support their business needs and improve the level of information management and data maturity across the AEC.
It is an exciting time as the team works closely with the Election Systems Modernisation program to define the landscape for the new AEC systems and processes. As part of the team, you will get to see tangible outcomes from your work: most notably in the delivery of electoral events and services.
As the Director of Data Capability Exchange, you will lead the team responsible for improving the AEC’s data capability and maturity levels, as well as participating in section and branch planning and aligning longer term planning with agency goals and objectives.
The Director is also responsible for managing the AEC’s data strategy, governance, quality and integration, ensuring the agency maintains a robust and sustainable platform to meet current and future needs in reporting and data analytics. You will also play a crucial role in shaping the broader data landscape, identifying and implementing improvements and uplifting data platforms, processes, and governance to elevate election forecasting, modelling, and reporting. You will lead and manage the Data Capability Exchange Section, building and sustaining a positive culture across the Team, Branch and Division focussed on collaboration, professionalism and delivery.
You will also be responsible to facilitate high quality outputs, including building team capability to maintain a high level of expertise, encouraging career development and inbuilt succession planning. This includes developing and actively manage key internal and external relationships, including collaborating with key stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation. In addition to representing and explaining agency views in various forums.
The Director is responsible for providing high quality and timely advice internally and externally, including guidance and reporting to Branch leadership and the Senior Executive cohort in relation to Section/Branch functional responsibilities. You will contribute to doctrine, election preparation and delivery activities in accordance with the Election Readiness Framework, according to individual accountabilities and responsibilities. Participate in open and flexible communication to support an agency culture that values data as a corporate asset and manage deliverables within budget and resourcing allocation.

About Australian Electoral Commission
We run elections and referendums.
A federal election is one of the nation’s largest, most complex and most scrutinised peacetime logistical events. It has tens of millions of moving parts and happens every three years or so on an unknown date. It takes a lot of detailed planning and this work contributes positively to Australian democracy.
In between elections there can be by-elections and/or referendums, there will be industrial elections and ballots, we maintain the electoral roll, we help draw electoral boundaries, we administer the financial disclosure scheme and much more.
