Position Purpose

The Furniture Specialist will be a dedicated and skilled member of our Equipment Team, focused on assembling and finishing furniture items made from CNC-cut plywood. The position requires strong attention to detail, creativity, and a quality-focused attitude. Responsibilities include sanding, varnishing, furniture assembly, and the use of a laser cutting machine for fabrics. There will also be opportunities to apply handy-person skills during occasional client visits, including taking measurements, customised project deliveries and pick ups, material pick-ups from local suppliers. This role will also include tailored solutions and modifying daily living aids.

Key accountabilities

Reading and Interpreting Instructions: Carefully follow build guidelines, resources, and technical drawings to ensure proper assembly.

Furniture Assembly: Assemble pre-cut plywood pieces into finished furniture items such as chairs, tables, and custom-designed solutions.

Finishing Touches: Sand, varnish, stain, or paint furniture pieces, achieving a professional finish while addressing any alignment or surface issues.

Laser Cutting: Operate the laser cutting machine for fabrics and other relevant materials as required.

Quality Control: Inspect and test completed pieces to ensure secure, precise, and durable assembly.

Order Fulfilment: Support the timely delivery of orders with a strong focus on quality and client satisfaction.

Site Visits & Handy-Person Skills: From time to time, undertake client visits for measurements, installations, or project deliveries; a current driver’s licence is required.

Continuous Development: Contribute ideas to improve assembly methods, furniture design, and customised adaptations for technical aids.

Collaboration: Work closely with other volunteers and team members to ensure efficient and effective production.

Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

Qualifications and experience

Woodworking Skills: Intermediate to Advanced woodworking skills, including knowledge of tools and assembly techniques.

Attention to Detail: Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.

Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, sanding, and assembling materials for hours at a time.

Team Player: Willingness to collaborate and communicate effectively with other team members.

Safety Conscious: Commitment to maintaining a safe and clean workspace.

Technical reading skills – Understanding assembly instructions, blueprints, and technical diagrams.

Problem-solving – Ability to address and resolve issues that arise during assembly of furniture, such as missing parts or misaligned components.

Tool and equipment proficiency – Skilled use of hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, etc.), power tools (drills, saws, etc.) and machinery including Laser Cutter essential for furniture building.

Safety awareness – Knowledge of safety protocols to prevent injuries.

Communication skills – Collaborating with team members, discussing project details, and interacting with customers regarding furniture assembly, customizations and delivery of furniture.
