About the Commissioner for Uniform Legal Services Regulation role

The Commissioner is a statutory role under the Legal Profession Uniform Law, serving as both the Commissioner for Uniform Legal Services Regulation and CEO of the Legal Services Council. This pivotal position drives consistency in legal regulation across jurisdictions and promotes expansion of the Uniform Law Framework to non-participating states and territories.

Appointed by the Victorian Attorney-General (on recommendation from the Uniform Law Standing Committee), the Commissioner leads strategic policy, regulatory integration, and operational excellence, supported by a small Sydney-based secretariat of legal policy and administrative staff. This is a full-time appointment for a 5-year term, with the possibility of reappointment.

  • Strong organisational leadership, including staff, financial, and strategic management.
  • Excellent communicator and negotiator, adept at building influential partnerships.

About the Commissioner Role

  • Lead the Council's operations and committees in line with its strategic direction and timelines set by the Council and Standing Committee.
  • Ensure the secretariat delivers timely, high-quality advice, particularly on the development and maintenance of Uniform Rules.
  • Implement strategic planning, budgeting, governance, and accountability frameworks to support effective delivery of the Council's mandate.
  • Promote compliance with the requirements of the Uniform Law and the Uniform Rules.
  • Ensure consistent and effective implementation of the dispute resolution and professional discipline provisions of the Uniform Law through the development of appropriate guidelines.
  • Raise awareness of the Uniform Law and its adoption in non-participating jurisdictions.
  • Oversee financial management and drive operational efficiencies.
