Hospitality experience needed for non hospitality job
Ausbeds Pty Ltd
Posted 25 days ago
I'm Karl, I own ausbeds, it's a mattress factory in Marrickville. I'm an ex-chef, and I got out of hospitality and built a pretty decent business.
Now I'm looking for someone to help out, and I want someone from hospitality. What I have come to learn is, in hospo, you really do have some of the best training for business. Putting customers first, vibing with customers, and just getting the work done are traits I see much more with people from hospo than other industries. We can't be too lazy in hospo.
It's kinda the same, we take orders, make the stuff, send the stuff out, it's basically a cafe, but we're serving mattresses. Ok, that's a stretch, but you get the point, it ain't that different.
So if you're are looking to move from hospitality, and you want something where you don't work nights, are paid well, and customers like you, send me an email.
But please don't call ausbeds about the job, I've already got too much on my plate. Also I can smell an ai job application and the more proper it is the less likely it is that I'll read it.
This is a scrappy off the top of my head human ad, send me a scrappy of the top of your head human email, tell me a bit about yourself, have a conversation, tell me why you want the job. I want someone who is serious and can take responsibility, This is reflected in the pay.
send me (karl) an email to [email protected]
Now, let's start with what everyone cares about the most and work our way down.
The Money.
Monday - Wednesday: 10-6pm
Pay Rate: $42/hour (Base Rate)
Hours: 23
Subtotal: $966
Sunday: 10-2pm
Pay Rate: $63/hour (Base Rate x 1.50)
Hours: 4
Subtotal: $252
You can book in sundays off with me sometimes and I can do it. But by default you'll be taking the sundays. There is 3 of us that can do weekends, so you don't need to do every sunday, But basically, sundays are your responsibility.
Total Weekly Pay: $1,218 (plus bonuses plus overtime when needed)
Bonuses, tl;dr - I have incentives for you to stay, the pay keeps going up
The bonus will begin when you reach a level where you have taken full responsibility for your role and I can see you are the right fit. Probably 3 months ish I'll be able to know.
The bonus structure is paid out every week based on the sales figures for the week. You see it immediately. It's a commission, but it's not a per sale commission. It's based on the total sales of the company. For example, when the bonus starts, it might be 20-30 bucks a day, in 2 years it might be 50-80 bucks a day, (but I don't know as it's tied to revenue). I'll give you this spreadsheet and I'll stick to the agreement. It's important to know where the job is going and I will provide that agreement.
It's a business alignment bonus. If everyones getting more money when the business is busier, everyones happy when it's busy, good vibes.
The future
The business is growing, my estimate based on the current trajectory is that your pay will be on track (inc bonuses) to be at around 120-140 grand in 3 years (for 36 ish hours)
Could be way more could be less, it depends how fast we grow. (This year was up 30%)
If the business grows, you get paid more so you are incentivised to make sure I am not getting bogged down with the day to day stuff, this way I can I can grow the business and your pay with it.
Now, the boring stuff, the work
Just do the things that pop up, whatever it may be, help customers, smile be nice and helpful, this is not sales, it's service. Do all the repeatable tasks so I can focus on bringing more people in the door, which in turn, increases your bonus.
So what exactly pops up in a mattress factory to do?
We are a different kind of mattress joint, I created this business modeled on what I learnt as a chef, always be ready, always be prepared. You could say we are prepped and ready to deal with peoples sleep problems instead of hunger problems. Turns out, non of my competitors done there mise en place.
I have this system where we can drive out and optimise peoples sleep through my component system. Very often, that's what we are doing. People like this service, we are helping them. When one of these people tell you that you've made their pain go away, it's a good feeling.
People are either buying the system (mattress) or calling up and getting adjustments.
Nobody else does this. The reason I need and you is because it's kind of just me doing this sunday to wednesday, and I need help.
What you will do
People call and want to arrange swaps of components (firmness swaps) so they can sleep better, you'll help them, booking it in etc'
On monday, do the timesheets (pretty basic I can teach you).
Random phone calls from marketers which you will need to hang up on them.
Helping customers in the showroom, showing them the component system. (Showing not selling, people usually know about it before they get here, but we just make sure they understand how it works, some charm/personality will be valuable here)
You will ask for the address, and take some notes down for the guys downstairs who will make the mattress and deliver them.
I will be there the majority of the time so if you have 3 braincells you'll be fine, it's not rocket science. Common sense will be valuable here.
It's pretty straightforward stuff, I've got great processes and it's very organised. It's a well oiled machine.
about the environment
Working in a mattress shop can sound boring, however ausbeds has a slight difference. We make them in the same building as we sell them. This makes the environment quite dynamic. There's always something going on. Someone's sewing, we do our own marketing, so we might be doing videos etc, we're assembling, making, delivering, it's a moving environment. I never know what's going to happen next. Also, it's in a pretty cool nook of Marrickville, 30 seconds walk from Messina ice creams massive factory/shop, and near factory theatre. Heaps of awesome food around here, nice sangas
A bit more about my company, or, what we do at ausbeds (we basically make buying a mattress not suck)
Mattress shopping has some pretty terrible issues. Like, what if it's uncomfy later, in a few weeks or months, what if it sags etc. These problems are the reason people are terrified of mattress shopping. They don't know if it's the right choice and it's super expensive..
Ausbeds is about solving these pain points. The system I have made allows us to deal with any problem the customer can throw at us. It's for this reason, people seem to resonate with what we do, search through our reviews to see this, heaps on productreview.com.au, and google reviews.
One problem with serving the public can be that there can be disagreements and customers can get angry. Because of the system I have built, the customer has no opportunity to get angry. We always have a calm way of solving any customer issues. This is something that I really enjoy about ausbeds, I was a chef before starting ausbeds and it was the polar opposite of this. It could be quite a stressful environment.
I much prefer the pace of ausbeds, and the customers are always (99% of the time) lovely!
This job is somewhat unique in that people purchase on site, we make them in the same building, and we deliver them straight away. For this reason it can be quite rewarding taking someone through the process of choosing, to the mattress to be delivered in their bedroom, sometimes in less than 24hours.
Good things about working here
Everyone likes a calm working environment. That's how I run ausbeds. I keep the pressure at a minimum, I think if everyone's relaxed it will bleed through to the customer. Starting at 10 is a good thing also. The area around ausbeds is fantastic for cafes, bars, food. Loads of stuff around here.
I suggest you look at our youtube vids, insta vids. Have a look at what we are doing here. If it resonates with you, and you want to be part of it.
