About Us:

Kite Magnetics (Melbourne, Australia) develops and manufactures advanced magnetic materials for use in high perormance electric motors. Our patented Aeroperm® nanocrystalline material, originating at Monash University, enables lighter, more efficient electric motors and generators for weight- and energy-sensitive applications.

The Opportunity

Help build a new class of magnetic materials and stator cores. This is a hands-on production role in a clean, procedure-driven prototype environment—a degree is not required. You’ll assemble, operate and improve prototype production equipment, and test materials/components alongside an incredibly collaborative and knowledgeable engineering team.

Location: Onsite only, Notting Hill (next to Monash University; bus from Caulfield Station)

Hours: Permanent day shift with flexible start 6:00–9:30am (corresponding finish). No weekends or overtime.

Employment type: Full-time, permanent

Reporting to: Principal Materials Engineer

Team: Work with 5 materials/process engineers and our Industrial Electrician (15-person company)

Targeting Commencement Before September 30th

What you’ll do

  • Run production equipment to documented procedures (SOPs) and meet safety, quality and schedule expectations.
  • Perform set-ups and changeovers, including first-article checks and basic line clearance.
  • Carry out in-process inspection and testing of materials/components; record clear, traceable results in simple digital logs.
  • Support manual assembly of prototype production equipment and components; contribute ideas to fixtures/jigs and workflow.
  • Use measurement and test tools: micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, precision scales, hand tools; operate magnetic test equipment and examine samples under microscopes.
  • Access to lathe and mill for qualified users (or training provided).
  • Work safely around hoists, compressed gases, vacuum systems, and industrial ovens/high-temperature equipment.
  • Follow good documentation practices as we progress toward ISO 9001 readiness next year, and protect company IP by adhering to confidentiality and procedures.

Requirements

What you’ll bring

  • Attention to detail and steady hands for repetitive, quality-critical work.
  • Practical, hands-on aptitude (mechanical/electrical) and comfort using tools and basic test gear.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions and simple technical drawings.
  • Team player with clear communication and a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Physically able to stand for extended periods and safely lift/carry materials/equipment as required.
  • Right to work in Australia (no visa sponsorship or relocation).
  • Nice to have (not essential):
  • Certificate III/IV in Engineering/Manufacturing or strong relevant experience
  • Exposure to prototype, R&D, or small-batch manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 for basic documentation and communication

Benefits

Salary & progression

  • Tiered salary bands (commensurate with experience):
  • Entry: $60,000–$68,000 + super (training focus)
  • Experienced: *$68,000–$78,000 + super
  • Senior Tech: $78,000–$85,000 + super (lead cells, train others)
  • 6-month salary review tied to demonstrated capability and responsibilities.
  • Clear development pathway: Technician → Senior Technician → Production Lead (based on skills and business needs).

Why you’ll love it here

  • Permanent day shift with flexible starts (6:00–9:30am) and no weekends/OT
  • Small team, big impact, work shoulder-to-shoulder with domain experts
  • On-site parking and easy public transport access (Caulfield Station bus)
