Lives Lived Well offer a variety of community and residential Alcohol and Other Drug programs throughout Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia, helping thousands of people every year to navigate AOD related challenges and move forward in life. In a peaceful area based in Mareeba (Cairns), Shanty Creek is our Indigenous alcohol and drug residential treatment and recovery program. It provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women, aged 18 years and over, who are experiencing alcohol or other drugs dependency or misuse and mental health concerns. The program is dedicated to acceptance, compassion, respect and trust. It is an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women can find solutions to their drug and alcohol problems. Shanty Creek provides a safe and supportive environment, to assist clients in reaching their goals and reduce the harm of drugs or alcohol. Your Opportunity The AOD Support Worker role includes client supervision outside of normal program hours, day to day client support, taking clients to appointments, supervising self-administration of medication, and maintaining client records. We have several casual roles available, which will include a mixture of morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts on a 24 hour, 7 day roster. Sleepover shifts require the AOD Support Worker to sleep onsite in a secure space, to be available if residents require assistance overnight. These positions are "identified positions" and Lives Lived Well considers that being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for them, under s 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld). What you’ll bring You don’t need to hold a formal qualification for this role, but you do need to be motivated, committed, and have a genuine interest in working within the Alcohol and Other Drugs sector. Your skills and attributes will include:

  • Flexibility and commitment to working a 24/7 roster pattern which includes evening shifts – and feeling comfortable working in an autonomous role
  • Being an excellent communicator – you’ll be able to engage with a range of people from different walks of life, in a non-judgemental and supportive way
  • A friendly, open, and positive attitude – building relationships to support clients, and providing them with a positive role-model, will be a big part of your role
  • Emotional maturity and a calm demeanour, especially in high-pressure or conflict situations
  • Working within professional boundaries with a solid understanding of how to practice these with clients and colleagues
  • You’ll self-care – this role can be challenging and it’s important to us that you are at your best, to do your best
  • Being willing, engaged and comfortable with change – we welcome ideas and suggestions for improvement
  • Strong computer skills, experience with client note-taking and an understanding of how handovers work

You will need to hold a current Australian Drivers Licence, and either hold, be working towards, or willing to obtain a Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Mental Health, Community Services or another relevant field. You will also need to be willing to obtain your First Aid and CPR Certificate. Our values are important to us, so you’ll need to evidence that you align with these. Benefits of Working with Us We love continual improvement and support our people with plenty of learning and development.
