  • Ongoing full-time (35 hours per week) opportunity
  • Office location – South West NSW/Hybrid working supported. Location can be negotiated
  • Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $115,817 to $130,667 + super

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is currently seeking to appoint an ongoing Compliance & Regulation Officer to join our Biodiversity Conservation & Science branch.

In this role, you will contribute to the development and implementation of robust and credible compliance and audit programs within the region to ensure best regulatory practice and the delivery of innovative environmental and conservation outcomes, consistent with relevant policies, practices and statutory requirements.

About You – The ideal candidate will

  • This role is for someone who possesses a passion for compliance and can apply your skills to make a difference to the environment
  • You should have an exceptional ability to build and maintain productive internal and external stakeholder relations and foster collaboration.
  • You will need to be available to undertake remote travel with members of our team for periods of up to a week in some of NSW most incredible and remote locations.
  • Ability to undertake travel is essential to conduct site inspections, interviews and gather evidence for cases.
  • Ability to undertake investigation and audits including Kangaroo management involving inspections of kangaroo carcasses and kangaroo processing sites, the clearing of native vegetations, harm to threatened species and habitats and investigation into Aboriginal Cultural Heritage matters.
  • You will enjoy working in a team of experienced investigators that are keen to assist you and for you to bring your own skills, ideas and talent to the team for sharing.
  • You will be honest, reliable, practical, resilient, hands-on, self-motivated, use your initiative and have the ability to self-manage and work autonomously at times.
  • You will have the confidence and experience to at times communicate effectively with hostile stakeholders and apply appropriate risk assessment and mitigation skills at all times.
  • You will appreciate that WHS is our top priority and of the upmost importance to us as a team
  • You will have the ability to understand and apply various legislation
  • You will have the ability to gather, record, case manage and present evidence and make decisions to assist in compliance outcomes.
  • You will have the confidence and experience to investigate and apply appropriate compliance outcomes that may include, warnings, penalty notices, prosecutions and enforceable undertakings
  • You will enjoy working with a team that use technology and various platforms to benefit our investigations that includes drones, spatial data programs, mapping technology and desktop analysis.
  • You have the ability and willingness to undertake remote first aid training, Four Wheel Drive training, Advanced Four-Wheel Drive Recovery training and Drone training.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary operational and strategic requirements for undertaking complex compliance programs, audits and investigations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing compliance and regulation in a government or non-government setting.

Essential requirements

  • Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Hold ISO 19011 auditor certification or similar or have capacity to obtain such certification within 3 months of commencement in this role.
  • Current NSW Class C Drivers Licence.
  • Criminal History Check given the regulatory and compliance activities conducted.
