The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service is a not-for-profit organisation providing holistic legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. Our work is grounded in cultural respect, community collaboration, and self-determination.
About the Role
The Senior Social Worker plays a key role in supporting culturally safe, trauma-informed, and holistic care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by domestic, family and sexual violence. This is both a strategic and hands-on role. You'll provide direct support to clients, guidance to staff, and contribute to culturally grounded practice across the organisation. Reporting to the Therapeutic Practice Lead, this role is central to NAAFLS’ vision of Aboriginal-led, strengths-based models of care.
Key Responsibilities
Therapeutic Practice & Client Support
- Support culturally safe and trauma-informed care for clients with complex needs
- Provide secondary consultation to staff on risk, trauma, disclosures and engagement
- Offer brief therapeutic support or counselling where appropriate
Workforce & Staff Support
- Co-lead reflective practice, debriefing and peer learning sessions
- Help build staff capacity through training and support
- Promote staff wellbeing through vicarious trauma prevention strategies
- Support practice reviews and critical incident responses
Organisational Practice
- Review casework to ensure cultural and clinical alignment
- Support quality improvement and culturally safe practice planning
- Step in to support Case Workers when Team Leaders are unavailable
- Respond to ethical and risk-related concerns (e.g. consent, safety, reporting)
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build respectful partnerships with Aboriginal organisations and healing services
- Support advocacy efforts for culturally safe, Aboriginal-led service systems
- Represent NAAFLS in sector forums and community networks
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
- Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or similar – and eligible for professional membership (AASW, APS or equivalent)
- Experience in client-centred, trauma-informed casework or counselling
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with Aboriginal clients and communities
- Commitment to confidentiality and ethical service delivery
- Able to build and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
- Understanding of family violence, mandatory reporting, and legal responsibilities
- Willing to travel to remote regions (Big Rivers and East Arnhem)
- Hold or able to obtain a Working with Children Clearance and Criminal History Check
- Current NT 'C' Class Driver Licence
Desirable
- Strong written communication – able to prepare reports, assessments, and submissions
- Experience using digital case management systems and improving service processes
