We’re looking for a confident, organised and proactive person to join the City and Environment Directorate’s media team. You’ll help tell the stories of the directorate with an audience-first lens, shining a spotlight on interesting projects in the realm of climate change and energy, environment, parks and conservation and planning, ensuring the Canberra community is well informed on government programs, policies and decisions.

This role is about crafting meaningful messages in the interest of the community, supporting major campaigns and communications strategies, and responding to media enquiries. You’ll be trusted to manage your own workload, generate fresh ideas, and work on both proactive and reactive media opportunities. You’ll also collaborate with colleagues from across government and contribute to key initiatives and campaigns.

This ASO6 role will work closely with the directorate’s strategic communications and digital content units.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.

Eligibility/other requirements:

What you’ll do:

  • Collate and strategically prepare information in response to media requests including talking points, spokesperson media training and briefings.
  • Work with stakeholders and subject matter experts to organise proactive media opportunities.
  • Liaise effectively with media representatives and a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively across government with Senior Officers, Executives and Ministers’ Offices to proactively improve content provided to our community.
  • Bring an audience-first lens to your work, informed by research, insights and evaluation.
  • Assist the wider team with the coordination, implementation and evaluation of communications activities including content creation as required.
  • Provide communication support at the Public Information Coordination Centre (PICC) in times of a Territory emergency.
  • Provide administrative support as required.
  • Understand and work within the ACTPS Code of Conduct and ACTPS values of respect, integrity, collaboration and innovation, and model behaviour consistent with the ACTPS Respect Equity and Diversity framework.

What you’ll bring:

  • Proven track record in media (reactive and proactive) and issues management.
  • Knowledge of contemporary communications and media practices.
  • Ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders to get the best outcome for the community.
  • Demonstrated high work ethic, ability to meet deadlines under limited supervision, exercise initiative in a complex and dynamic work environment, and to work under pressure.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders and audiences.
  • Sound organisational skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, and determine priorities.
  • Ability to appropriately handle sensitive material with confidentiality, showing sound judgement and integrity.

Note: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of six months with the possibility of extension up to less than 12 months and/or permanency. A merit pool may be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months. This position is based in a workplace designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk. The opportunity to work from home exists as operational needs allow.
