On behalf of the Office of the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia (OSECI), face2face Recruitment wants to hear from interested candidates.

This role is available across all states in Australia with hybrid/remote working arrangements. Part time work arrangements will also be considered. This is a fixed term contract for 24 months with potential for extension.

About the Organisation

The Office of the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia (OSECI) plays a key role in supporting the Australian Government’s efforts to address and counter Islamophobia. It's work is focused on advancing community trust, promoting cultural responsiveness, and delivering targeted initiatives that challenge stereotypes and foster inclusion. By building community resilience and responding to Islamophobic incidents, OSECI provides vital input to policy, advocacy, and public engagement.

About the Job

The Legal Policy Advisor will provide expert legal and policy advice to the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia. This senior role is responsible for conducting research, analysing legislation, and developing policy recommendations to combat anti-Muslim hate, prejudice, and racism within an Australian legal context. You will translate complex legal concepts into practical, actionable policy guidance and provide direct advice on sensitive issues to senior leadership. The role requires strong judgement, cultural competency, and the ability to engage across government, community, and legal stakeholders.

Key areas of focus include:

Researching and analysing policy and legislative options to address Islamophobia.

Drafting and advising on submissions, policy frameworks, and reform initiatives.

Providing strategic legal advice on complex and sensitive issues, including human rights and anti-discrimination law.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with government, community, and legal stakeholders.

Supporting reporting, briefing, and strategic planning activities for the Special Envoy and OSECI leadership.

Ensuring legal and governance processes are applied consistently and effectively.

Required Skills and Experience

To be considered, you must:

Be an Australian citizen.

Hold or have the ability to obtain a baseline clearance.

Essential qualifications and skills:

At least four years’ post-admission experience in legal or policy roles.

Expertise in human rights and anti-discrimination law.

Experience in law reform processes and developing policy solutions.

Demonstrated ability to draft submissions, analyse policy, and provide clear advice on complex legal issues.

Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.

Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex legal concepts into plain English.

Cultural competency, sensitivity, and professionalism when engaging with diverse communities.

Proven capacity to identify and manage legal risks while upholding ethical standards.

Desirable:

Specialist knowledge of Islamophobia, its causes, and impacts.

Experience in international human rights and anti-discrimination frameworks.

Strong networks in legal, policy, or advocacy sectors relevant to human rights.

Experience working with academic, policy, or legal peak bodies to drive reform.
