Strategic and autonomous role managing Crown Land, Native Title, and leases

9-day fortnight, 4 weeks annual leave, and 15 days sick leave

Relocation assistance up to $10,000 + short-term rental subsidy available

Be the Legal Mind Behind Council’s Land Strategy

Help shape the future of Tenterfield by leading property negotiations, Native Title matters, and Crown Land management in this newly created, high-impact role.

Steer Council’s Land Legacy

Tenterfield Shire Council is seeking an experienced and confident Land Management Officer to join the Office of the Director of Corporate Services. This standalone role plays a key part in ensuring Council’s property dealings are legally compliant, strategically aligned, and community-focused.

Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate Services, you will lead end-to-end land transactions, manage property registers and contracts, and support Council’s legal responsibilities around Crown Land and Native Title.

The Ground You’ll Cover

Manage Crown Land, Native Title, and Aboriginal Land Claims in compliance with legislation

Prepare and maintain management plans for Council-owned and managed lands

Coordinate leases, licences, permits, and agreements across Council properties

Lead acquisitions and disposals to support capital and operational needs

Provide internal advisory services on land use, conveyancing, and property law

Liaise with agents, surveyors, legal representatives, and external authorities

Conduct due diligence, title reviews, and legal research

Maintain registers, GIS data, and reporting documentation

Prepare Council reports relating to land dealings, leases, and compliance

Ensure adherence to the Crown Lands Management Act and other relevant laws

Settling In, Stepping Up

You’ll receive a structured induction covering workplace safety, conduct, and systems. You’ll meet with the Director of Corporate Services and key stakeholders to understand current land portfolios and priorities. Expect to take on real projects early, including live leases, valuations, and title reviews. While this is an independent role, you’ll have strategic guidance and access to Council’s wider infrastructure and property teams.

The Qualities That Set You Apart

To succeed in this role, you will need:

Tertiary qualifications in Land Economics, Property, Town Planning, Business, Legal Studies or related field

Demonstrated experience with Crown Land, Native Title, and complex property dealings

Strong understanding of land reclassification, leasing, and conveyancing practices

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing

High-level time management and problem-solving ability

Australian citizenship or legal work eligibility

Desirable qualifications and experience:

Additional qualifications in a property-related discipline

Experience in local government or similar regulatory environments

Background in managing land management plans and lease portfolios

You are confident working independently, comfortable interpreting legislation, and able to influence outcomes through clear communication and sound judgment. You bring initiative, maturity, and a strong community mindset to every interaction.

Live Local, Lead Big

Tenterfield Shire Council values integrity, accountability, and community. Here, you’ll find a team culture that’s supportive, connected, and purpose-driven. Your work will have a visible impact across the region.

You’ll enjoy:
• An attractive salary ranging from $87,000 to $100,000 p.a., commensurate with your qualifications and experience
• 12% superannuation
• 9-day fortnight for better work-life balance
• 4 weeks of annual leave (accruable)
• 15 days of sick leave (accruable)
• Relocation assistance up to $10,000
• Short-term rental subsidy to help with your move
• Ongoing professional development and learning opportunities
• Access to monthly onsite counselling through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
• Participation in Health and Wellbeing programs
