The Discrimination, Health Services and Disability and Community Services Commissioner and Information Privacy Commissioner, is inviting applications from experienced, highly motivated, proactive professionals to join the Complaints Team in the role of Senior Investigator and Conciliator.

The complaints team form part of the ACT Human Rights Commission – we are an independent agency established by the Human Rights Commission Act 2005. The role of the ACT Human Rights Commission is to:

  • Handle complaints in relation to health, disability and community services, privacy, abuse of vulnerable people and complaints under discrimination law.
  • Increase awareness of the rights and responsibilities of service users and service providers, and encourage service improvement.
  • Provide advice to government and others regarding their human rights obligations
  • Advocate for children, young people and adults experiencing vulnerability
  • Advocate for and support victims of crime

The Senior Investigator and Conciliator will manage a caseload of complex complaints across multiple jurisdictions including, health services, services for older people, services for children and young people, disability services, discrimination, privacy, retirement villages, elder abuse, abuse, neglect or exploitation of a person with a disability and older people, services for victims of crime, occupancy disputes and sexuality and gender identity conversion practices.

In addition to the investigation and conciliation (alternative dispute resolution) of complaints the role also includes undertaking research, policy and project work and community education.

The successful candidate will possess, or demonstrate the ability to quickly acquire, a sound understanding of the functions of the ACT Human Rights Commission and the statutory framework for complaint handling. Strong communication skills are essential, along with a proven ability to be proactive, adaptable, and manage competing priorities effectively. This role involves working directly with members of the ACT community to manage complaints within tight timeframes, requiring sound judgment, effective problem-solving skills, and a commitment to high-quality service delivery.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.   • Relevant tertiary qualifications in law or health are highly desirable.
  • Qualifications and experience in statutory investigation are desirable.
  • Qualifications and experience in conciliation/alternative dispute resolution are desirable.

Notes: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of 12 months with the possibility of permanency.

An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.
