About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as a Police Lawyer in Victoria Police's Legal Services Department (LSD).

Victoria Police's LSD provides legal services and advice to support policing, courts and the Victorian Community. Positioned within the Specialist Legal and Litigation Division, the Counter Terrorism Legal Unit (CTLU) is a specialised team of legally qualified sworn and VPS members who provide professional and timely legal services to Counter Terrorism Command (CTC). The CTLU's main function is to support the Counter Terrorism Command (CTC) to provide an effective response to terrorism incidents through the application of the Terrorism (Community Protection) Act 2003 (Vic) and other Acts. Duties may include providing expert legal advice on a broad range of matters, facilitating training with stakeholders, legal policy and legislative reform, and delivering operational legal support to investigators. As the successful applicant, you will undertake a wide range of duties in support of these functions.

Your duties will include:

  • Providing operational legal support to investigators and other members of CTC
  • Assisting in the preparation of legal advice in connection with but not limited to, the Terrorism (Community Protection) Act 2003 (Vic), Surveillances Devices Act (Vic) & (Cth) and the Crimes Act (Vic) & (Cth)
  • Assist preparing legislative reform and legal policy documents
  • Assist instructing counsel for written advice and/or appearance at court
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders on various CT related matters
  • Organise and facilitate professional legal training seminars

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form
  • Well-developed liaison and organisation skills
  • Sound legal research skills
  • Willingness to deliver presentations and training
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and within a small team in a professional and mature environment
  • Flexibility to work overtime when required or be recalled to duty

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, fixed-term position until 30 June 2027 is available.
  • The salary range for a VPS3 role is $79,122 to $96,073 (covering salary ranges VPSG3.1 and VPSG3.2). Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head. To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
