Role

The role of Head of Teaching will suit a versatile individual who is curious to discover impact possible through leadership in education. This role includes functions of team leadership, program development, strategic leadership and schools relationship building. The successful candidate will value growing themselves and empowering others, and is agile and open minded when navigating complexity.

Strengthen a culture that values care for our students, stakeholders and colleagues, and compassion for ourselves during times of challenge.

Lead a team and grow its individuals while maintaining performance in an evolving and complex environment.

Nurturing others so they can contribute to the building of program development, teaching practice and design- thinking ability.

Program

Lead program development using design-thinking frameworks in cooperation with Partnership and Technology portfolios.

Using a range of pedagogical practices as required.

Interpret and present student evaluation data, and lead program improvement strategies.

Maintain high-quality, relevant content in both new and existing programs.

Maintain high-quality performance of program delivery.

Timetable program staff factoring VGSA, teaching experience, strengths, and project timelines.

Strategic leadership

Monitor the evolving global landscape, how it relates to education, and contribute to strategic planning with the Director and leadership team.

Utilise data from student surveys, student attendance and classroom observations to provide evidence based insights for the Director and leadership team.

Appreciate multiple perspectives, bridging the teaching team and the leadership team.

Support the Director’s requirements for reporting to multiple key stakeholders, including partner schools, MTS Administrator, the Tech School Branch, the North Eastern Victorian Region of Department of Education and Monash University.

Network building

Meet with catchment schools and lead engaging strategies to understand their needs and wants.

Represent Monash Tech School at community, education, and industry events.

Deliver professional development for external school Teachers, Education Support Staff and Monash Tech School staff.

Provide mentoring and professional learning to partner schools for design- thinking in education.

Selection Criteria

SC1 Demonstrated expert knowledge of the relevant curriculum. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage the implementation of school priorities, and the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum.

SC2 Demonstrated ability to lead the planning and implementation of high impact teaching strategies that respond to student learning needs. Demonstrated ability to support teachers to evaluate the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.

SC3 Demonstrated exemplary ability to monitor and assess student learning at a class, cohort or whole-school level and use this data to lead improvement initiatives. Demonstrated ability to support others in using data to inform teaching practice and to provide feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.

SC4 Demonstrated exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative relationships with students, colleagues, parents and the broader school community focused on student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.

SC5 Demonstrated ability to model behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values and support colleagues to adopt these behaviours and attitudes. Demonstrated ability to reflect upon their own, others and whole-school practice and contribute to the provision of whole-school professional learning.

SC6Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and empower project teams.


About John Monash Science School

Clayton, VIC, Australia

John Monash Science School is the first school of its kind in Victoria and one of only three such specialist science providers in Australia. Opening for the first time in 2010 with 197 Year 10 students, the school is now at capacity with 640 students from Years 10 to 12 and over 80 full and part time members of staff. Some 25 of these are Education Support staff.

The Leadership Team comprises three Principal Class Officers, nine Leading Teachers, the Business Manager and the Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives. The facilities and infrastructure are multi-storey and based on a ‘learning commons’ design to facilitate the variety of flexible teaching and learning approaches characteristic of the school. The school hosts leading-edge technology resources which have provided an ideal opportunity to further enhance and enrich learning. Monash University provided the site for the school building at the southern end of the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP).
